I'm not sure what most of the recent reviews were talking about when they wrote their reviews. My partner and I travel all around the Ottawa region to new or underappreciated restaurants and leave honest Google reviews. It is clear to see that the owners have taken action with this location and have updated their staff to reflect a restaurant worthy of an honorable mention. My partner and I went to an early dinner and tried multiple different meal options to truly see the capabilities of their chef and of the waiter. To start, I would like to point out how nice it was to eat inside. Though not a modern look, the layout was very welcoming and properly themed. Also, tables and chairs were convenient for people of all sizes and offered indoor and outdoor seating options upon request. As for the service, I would not expect a 5 star service from this establishment, but I was surprised to see how friendly yet professional the staff was during our whole experience. It is clear that the owners take care of their employees, and it shows it the quality of their service as well. Now, for the food, I did not like their pho. There are better places that offer a more flavorful pho with more ingredients. However, their wonton soup have left my partner and I craving for more. It was a perfect balance of vegetables and broth, with perfect bite size wonton seasoned to perfection. They are clearly handmade and were the star of the show. We ordered an appetizer portion to share, but we'll be coming back very soon for meal portions as well. We also ordered their vermicelli (pork, shrimp, and vegetables), which was honestly better than any other location in Ottawa to date. It could have used more pork to balance the perfectly fried vegetables, but times are tough. Lastly, we ordered a seafood sizzle plate to truly test the chef's skills. My hat goes off to the chef since I was pleased to receive perfectly cooked calamari (far from chewy but not raw), and the plate was indeed sizzling! I strongly recommend pairing with some white rice as the sauce is worthy of being...
Read moreWe loved the restaurant and the previous owner was a good man who was very friendly and attentive. We really enjoyed his service and the food was out of this world. Me and my coworkers went there again for lunch today and it was a terrible experience under the new management and staff. I ordered Tea, the kettle was dirty and the cups were dripping with water, possibly because they were just washed a moment ago. I ordered a porc wonton soup, not only did the waiter asked me to find my usual order in the now much bigger menu for some reason, but i was served SHRIMP wonton. If i was allergic i would have been on the floor choking today. Worst of all my good friend usually comes with us is allergic to shellfish and if the roles were reversed she would have been in grave danger because of this mistake. I ordered Fresh rolls, the waiter did not know what it was, i had to first describe it and then find it in the menue, again... My wonton had ramen noodles inside this time despite me never asking for ramen noodles. And it was served with raw vegetables, it was like nothing was cooked at all. I barely ate half of it, it was plain tasting and very unpleasant to eat. The Mint they brought us was almost black, clearly not fresh and very clearly starting to ROT...
Before leaving i asked to see the receipt, the waiter gave me his notepad with my order written in letters and numbers, i simply cant make this up. I was charged for Porc wonton as i ordered at the very least.
I will miss the previous owner and the amazing service, and food they served. I won't be eating there again. And judging by the latest reviews, so is a lot of...
Read moreBE CAREFUL: Since the new ownership ALL 5 star reviews repeat roughly the same thing and those reviewers ALL have given positive reviews to this restaurant AND "Ongles La Crystal Spa". It could be legit (are they owned by the same folks who give coupons?) but those reviews are more than likely to be fake.
I was very disappointed tonight when I got my food, and I'm not going to give 1 star like everyone else, the food was good, but it wasn't the food I was expecting. I learn reading other comments that the ownership has changed, and it seems the recipes have changed as well. The sauce of their fried noodle dishes was so good, now it's average. The value isn't even close to what it was before, when we could order a small or large portion, now it seems they kept the prices for a large but only give a small portion, which they should have told me when I clearly stated on the phone I wanted the large ones (so there was much less food than anticipated for our family). There go the two stars for the service.
One the positive side, the service when it was time to pick up the food was very fast, the food was waiting when I got there while in the past I always waited 10-20 minutes or longer after getting there half an hour after I called.
The old Phoenix du Vietnam will be missed; this wasn't bad but I may not take the long drive from Aylmer to go...
