A Taste of Thailand at Makin Thai: A Culinary Delight
Located in the Pergola Commons Plaza in Guelph, Makin Thai offers a delectable journey into the vibrant flavors of Thailand. Recently, I had the pleasure of dining at this charming establishment last night, and I must say, it exceeded all my expectations.
Upon entering Makin Thai, I was greeted by the warm and inviting ambiance, adorned with subtle Thai-inspired decor that immediately set the tone for an authentic dining experience. The attentive staff guided me to my table with a smile, and I was eager to explore their menu offerings.
For my main course, I opted for the Khao Rad Kra Pow with ground chicken, a classic Thai dish renowned for its bold flavors and aromatic spices. True to its reputation, the dish arrived piping hot, showcasing a harmonious blend of tender ground chicken stir-fried with fragrant basil leaves, chili peppers, and garlic. Each bite was a symphony of flavors, perfectly balanced and utterly satisfying.
To complement my meal, I indulged in a refreshing Thai tea, which served as the ideal accompaniment to the rich and savory flavors of the Khao Rad Kra Pow. The creamy sweetness of the tea provided a delightful contrast, cleansing the palate between bites and leaving me craving for more.
As if the culinary journey couldn't get any better, I decided to treat myself to Makin Thai's homemade cantaloupe sherbet with sago for dessert. This delightful creation was a revelation - the velvety smoothness of the sherbet paired exquisitely with the chewy texture of the sago pearls, while the subtle sweetness of the cantaloupe imparted a refreshing finish to the meal.
Throughout my dining experience at Makin Thai, the service was impeccable. The staff demonstrated a genuine passion for their cuisine, offering recommendations and ensuring that every aspect of my meal was nothing short of perfection. Their attention to detail and commitment to customer satisfaction truly elevated the overall dining experience.

Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at MAKIN Thai Food in Guelph, and it was an outstanding experience from start to finish. This family-owned restaurant, located at 79 Clair Rd E in the Pergola Commons plaza, offers authentic Thai cuisine that truly delights the senses .
We began our meal with the Papaya Salad (Som Tum), a refreshing blend of shredded papaya, green beans, carrots, and tomatoes, tossed in a tangy dressing that perfectly balanced sweet, sour, and spicy flavors . The Calamari was crispy and tender, served with a homemade Thai sweet chili sauce that added just the right kick.
For our mains, the Pad Thai stood out with its rich, savory sauce enveloping perfectly cooked noodles, and the Thai Basil Stir-Fry offered a delightful combination of fresh vegetables and aromatic basil, all stir-fried to perfection. We concluded our meal with the Mango Sticky Rice, featuring ripe mango slices atop sweet coconut-infused sticky rice—a classic Thai dessert executed flawlessly.
The open kitchen concept allows diners to witness the culinary artistry behind each dish, adding to the overall dining experience . The staff were warm and welcoming, making us feel right at home.

Read moreI was disappointed as I read this was authentic thai. The people who make it may be authentic, but the food is for Farang
The Som Tham Thai (papaya salad) was likely made the night before and then they threw peanuts on it (not toasted) in the am. Its was weirdly north American sweet in flavour and watery ...as it would be if left for a long period and the water escaped , diluting the sauce and flavours.
The sticky rice was Japanese, not thai glutinous rice. It was over watered and not sticky, but slimy.
Beef Krapow was more like a North American gravy. Salty. Thickened .Heavy on soy sauce vs. Fish sauce. It had a great quality beef which I will give them points for. They used peppers (green and red) which carried no taste except the oil they were cooked in, and are not traditional.
Everything needed more flavour. I don't mean spice (heat) as I usually order a thai spicy dish if im a regular at a restaurant, but a medium if its my first time- to check the flavours. Garlic, basil, lime, cilantro ... flavour spices are needed
The best thing I did was order the random side of mint sauce that I had to throw on everything for flavour.
It may have been a bad day, so I'll try it again. However, this is more of a Canadian thai version of restaurant catering to farang than one that should be reviewed as authentic.
I lived in the South of Thailand, so I may...
