EDIT: After reading my review, Alex, the owner of Lyla's House reached out to me and offered us a "redo", on him as he wanted to make sure that we have a good experience. We gladly accepted the offer and went back on a "Country night" Thursday. We had a great time. The service was EXCELLENT, and we ordered the same charcuterie board which was fantastic both times. Thank you Alex for reaching out, it shows that you are invested in this little Gem on so many levels. We will be back!!!
We were there for Italian night last evening and I have to say we were a bit dissapointed regarding a few aspects of our night.
The food was very good, we shared a large charcuterie board between the 3 of us and everything was fresh and very tasty and there was more than enough food.
One of the issues was the music being incredibly loud, we had to shout to hear eachother speaking. We mentioned it to our sever which agreed with us, she said she's turn it down or ask about it, and it was never lowered throughout the evening.
When I received my bill, I asked why there was a mocktail on it as I had wine and a club soda, and I was told that that is how the club soda is punched in the system. I was shocked that it was $7 which is highway robbery. It was not San Pellegrino or Perrier, it was just plain club soda.
Our server was lovely, but definitely needs some education regarding portion sizes. I asked for a 9oz glass of wine and when I received it, it did not look like it was 9oz, so I questioned it, and she insisted that it was. When the time came for another round, I questionned it again, so she spoke to the bartender which confirmed it was indeed not 9oz. The server's excuse for not realizing it was less than a 9 oz was 'I don't drink wine, so it's hard for me to know the amounts"???? seriously, all she had to do was ask the bartender in the first place.
My friend's espresso martini tasted like burnt coffee, and was less than tasty.
We really wanted to find a new place to have some drinks and catch up other than the typical pubs in town, but we will not be returning after this less than...
Read moreService was probably the worst I've had in a long time. I'm extremely disappointed in both the service and drink quality.
We visited on Saturday afternoon and my first impression wasn't great to begin with â I've worked in a couple cafes in Toronto as a barista and I smiled at the barista and she did not reciprocate nor greet me, just ignored me, I assumed maybe she didn't see me so I didn't think much of it. When my boyfriend and I went to order coffee, the girl at the counter was also pretty unfriendly.
While we were waiting for our drinks, the people in front of us left to find a seat and I could hear the barista giggling with her coworker about how she mixed up their drinks and "didn't care", which I found unprofessional. She then proceeded to put her nose very close to every drink and sniff them because she couldn't tell which was which??? Extremely odd and gross behaviour. But then when she was making my boyfriend's drink, she even loudly repeatedly complained that she hated making this drink (a cortado... an extremely basic espresso-based drink) and that she didn't know how to make it. We recieved a latte, not a cortado.
Interestingly, I see other reviews complaining about the service. Note that my boyfriend and I are non-white, she was also unfriendly to the group of non-white women in front of me, but oddly enough was kind to the white people who were there... very interesting. The two baristas were giggling loudly with each other but absolutely stone-faced when serving us.
Please train your staff better on customer service, basic human decency, and at the very least, on how to make basic drinks. The cafe is very cute, I love the corner with take-home bottles and zines, but would absolutely never return based on...
Read moreI had one of the worst experiences at this cafĂ© on Saturday evening, and honestly, I donât usually write reviews, but this was beyond disappointing. The staffâs behavior was completely unacceptable and ruined the entire visit.
First of all, the attitude of one of the girls at the counter was shocking. Instead of being welcoming or even just neutral, she came across as rude and dismissive. When we bought a cup, she outright refused to provide a bag to carry it, and not just refused, but did it with so much unnecessary attitude as if we were asking for something unreasonable. Iâve been to many cafĂ©s, and something as simple as asking for a bag should never turn into an uncomfortable situation like this.
Secondly, the barista who prepared the drinks didnât even bother to serve them properly. Instead of giving us the drinks in actual cups like youâd expect from a cafĂ©, she handed them to us in disposable takeout cups. I mean, if I wanted drinks in cheap disposable cups with zero effort put into presentation, I could have easily gone to Tim Hortons or any other fast-food coffee chain. The whole point of going to a cafĂ© is for the experience, the service, and the proper way things are meant to be served. Here, that was completely missing.
The entire service felt careless and unprofessional. No attention was paid to the customers, no courtesy, and absolutely no sense of hospitality. For a place thatâs supposed to be in the business of customer service, theyâve really failed.
I wouldnât recommend this cafĂ© to anyone. If youâre looking for a nice coffee outing, good service, or even just basic respect from staff, this is definitely not the place. Save your time and money and go somewhere else where customers are...
