Just across from Gage Park is the cozy and well lit Gage Park Diner. Serving your usual breakfast and lunch fare, this 7 table eatery may be on the smaller side at first glance, but it is truly a quaint and friendly dining option right around the corner.
We arrived around 11 am on a Thursday, and by 11:45 almost all of the tables had been filled for lunch. They do a good turnover, so it's unlikely you'll need to wait. For those that can't wait: choose take-away! While seated we overheard folks call-in to place and pick up their orders.
PORTIONS/DIETARY OPTIONS: Portions are sizeable for what you pay, and for those who need Vegetarian or Vegan options, they have menus available for you! Those menus aren't short either. They offer a sizeable selection of offerings so you don't feel like you're missing out. Examples include: Just Egg, tofu, bacon tempeh, and vegan pancakes using almond milk. Gluten free options are also available.
OUR ORDERS: Being quite ravenous, we ordered the Heck Yeah and the Reuben Hash. These were both served with home fries that had onions in them, but don't worry, the servers are great and will ask you to be sure you're ok with them. The Heck Yeah was a massive amount of food, and well worth the price. I'd highly encourage folks try the Reuben Hash if you are fans of the sandwich. The only suggestion I could give is that they seasoned the potatoes with a bit more salt as they came across a bit bland in the hash, but that could have just been a one-off!
PARKING: Parking is free and available for 2 hours directly in front of the restaurant (left hand side of King St)
OVERALL: I'd give it a solid 4.5/5! Great service, good food in good sized portions, clean and quaint interior. It's a definite come...
Read moreSo kind of a mixed review here. I and my four friends came in and the place was noticeably busy. We pulled up and quickly ordered our food. The problem was it was nearly an hour (yes, literally an hour) before it came. A group of two came in 15 minutes after we did, ate, and left all before we even got our food. Not only did it take that long for us to get our food, I had to wait an additional 15-20 minutes for my french toast, which I ordered at the same time as the rest of my food.
Prices are fair, staff is very friendly and eager to serve, but along with the long wait time for food, another negative would be portion sizes (at least in my experience). I ordered the eggs benedict with home fries, which was very delicious, but (and this is no exageration) got about as many home fries as fingers on my two hands. My friend ordered the same dish and got at least twice as many home fries which, to me, shows a lack of consistency within their meal prep.
Again, great quaint little diner with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, but one hour to get breakfast? It was simply ridiculous. We were just about eating our fingernails by the time our...
Read moreSmall location but many options that are made fresh. Lots of options. There are two menus, one that has meat based options, and one with numerous vegetarian and vegan options. Think burgers, sandwiches, pancakes, egg based (vegan or not) dishes, etc. Quite a few drink options as well. Burgers were decent, whether vegan or not. Fries seemed homemade and were good. Vegan pancakes were thick, sweet, and were cooked on an area that had chocolate despite being plain, and had an interesting smell similar to corn bread. Pancakes were too go but had no cutlery or napkins. The strawberry juice (which can be made in a slushie) was absolutely delicious and easily the best part of the experience. Portions can appear small, but are decently sized, so be careful what you wish for. Overall, a family restaurant with homemade style food, a retro vibe and lots of options...
