My wife along with our friends often go to India Village (both locations) where recently for the past few years we have gone to this Dundas location more, out of convenience. Normally, we always receive good customer service mind you we are not needy or picky people so it is easy to please us! However, this most recent visit was rather disappointing. When we arrived, we were told food would take 40 minutes which was fine, we see it is slightly busy and the food is always made fresh here. We made our order of a few curries , naan, and beer. After 20minutes, drinks had still not been brought out for us so we reminded the server with which she responded “you did not receive it?”. We noticed other tables around us were being served drinks and pappadum crackers w/ dip so we also asked if we could get some while waiting to which she responded again “you did not receive it?”. Shortly after, only drinks were brought to us and they started to bring the curry dishes out. These were dropped off at the end of our table with no efforts to place it between us all (4 people) which ok no biggie. 10 mins later they finally bring out the naan to eat with the curries (normally they serve this together). Anyway, the food was very delicious as always, 20 minutes through eating it we had run out of drinks so we requested for water and napkins. We ended up having to ask 2 more times as both the servers kept forgetting and we were getting very thirsty. Near the end of the meal, 2 tables were sat by us and they received their drinks and pappadum w/ dip almost instantly. Our hunger was satisfied at this point so we did not mention anything about the pappadum but finally the server brought it to our table. Guess what, she brought it without the dip that normally comes with it and this was only to our table they decided not to provide the dip. We then requested for it to which the server responded “oh you want dip as well?” . This was irritating as for everyone else and every other time we’ve been there, it is customary to serve it together but this time just for our table, it was left out, which is a very minor issue but altogether was adding to all the other issues of this dining experience. Unfortunately, I will never dine here again, take-out would still be an option as their food is delicious but this experience has...
Read moreWhen I moved to Dundas, after living in Toronto for 13 years, the only thing I missed was the variety of ethnic cuisines that the big city offers. Around Christmastime, I saw that a new Indian restaurant would be opening up downtown right on King Street - I was elated! Being super pregnant and prone to serious food cravings, good Indian food needed to be easily accessible for me. Alas, this was not to be.
I've given this place two chances, each time tasted 'off' and not very homemade tasting. The butter chicken sauce was very 'red' and didn't taste like any butter chicken I've had outside of a food court mall. Even a frozen entree made by President's Choice tastes better and more authentic than this version. Why were there raisins in this dish, I kept saying all night. The saag paneer was okay, nothing wrong there and I was fairly pleased with it. My second visit to this restaurant, I explained to the chef/owner that I was disappointed with my previous experience and that I was giving it another shot, hoping for the best. He seemed to be very concerned with my disappointment and was eager to win me over. The butter chicken was again not good and he ended up making me some dish that I've never heard of before (by accident) shahi paneer? when I really ordered saag paneer - perhaps he misheard me, but this shahi paneer was not my cup of tea. It was sweet-ish tasting and it had a lot of raisins in it as well! I hate raisins and I have never in my life had raisins in my indian food from anywhere before. The naan bread was not fresh and he insisted that I get the garlic naan because the butter makes the naan keep better for when I took the food home (I got take-out). The garlic, I suspected, was supposed to disguise the fact that the bread was not fresh or made in a tandoori oven properly and was supposed to disguise the fact that the dishes I ordered did not taste that great. I was ticked off that I had wasted $30 - again- on a take-out meal that I couldn't enjoy eating. Raisins??? NO.
Food court level taste and quality. It made me miss...
Read moreNew to the city having just closed on a new house and spending the day on our feet cleaning, with no chairs or dining table as our belongings were moving the following week, we wanted Indian food and looked for a place to just sit and relax.
Highly rated with great reviews, we chose India Village and arrived an hour before closing. We didn't realize the dining room shuts down at that point and they only take walk-ins. Fortunately, after explaining our situation, they made an exception and allowed us to dine in, which was greatly appreciated. They did so graciously, and did not rush us whatsoever.
The food and service exceeded our expectations, which were already set fairly high based on the reviews we read.
Our server was extremely courteous and attentive.
My wife ordered the chicken madras which is what she typically gets, and has tried at least a dozen different places, and said it was the most flavourful one she'd ever had, with the curry rich with coconut.
I really enjoy heat and spice, and find the overwhelming majority of restaurants unable to satisfy that and I need to add something. However, this was not the case with the Garam Mirch Masala. It had definite heat while still remaining tasty.
We also got samosas and garlic naan which were delicious, and there was enough food to have leftovers the next night!
Great restaurant, highly recommend to all...
