Luckys Fish And Chips — Restaurant in Hamilton

Updated review 05/2025: I posted this review about 4 yrs ago and recently a reply to my original review was made by the new owners. They mentioned that the quality has greatly improved and the food was much better. I passed by the location today with it's new name and ownership and ordered the daily special of 1 pcs of Cod and chips with a drink for 10.45 and a side of gravy. I took it the food home and the quality was very good. Lots of fresh cut fries and a large portion of Cod double battered in a tasty coating. The gravy was smooth hot and tasty. The new owners were friendly and helpful. The location is a little sparse and empty, but don't let that take away from the much improved food quality. 4.5 stars!!!! (I round up!!)

I had passed Union Jack Fish and Chips many times dropping off packages at The UPS store located in the same strip mall and I decided to bring home some "chips and gravy" for myself and my wife. Staff was friendly. I think I was served by one of the owners (tons of newspaper articles on the wall, which i read while waiting for my order) I asked about the sizes of chips and she showed me the small vs medium size. The medium box looked like a good size to share and I opted for this size with a large gravy. I got my order and paid. Taking the food home and pulling it out of the bag I was pretty disappointed. The box was half full and the gravy was sub par. I have worked in the food service industry for years and I understand that gravy has some lumps...but when the gravy sits too long in the warmer it develops chunks and you can clearly see in one of the pics....pretty chunky. I would love to give Union Jack another chance as I have read some great reviews...but as of right now...first...

I have bought fish and chips here for quite a while, but the last few times have been horrible. I noticed that the meal was starting to be be ready in 5 mins and was cold when I got home. I live practically next door so don't have to travel too far. But last Friday was when I decided I will never go back. I had barely sat down when she called me and handed me my order already packed in the bag. I mentioned that it was very quick and asked if everything was pre cooked, she told me no, was cooked fresh when I ordered. I said it was really fast and I felt like it had been sitting and might be cold. No answer. When I got home the fish was almost cold and batter was soggy and the chips were disgusting. They were so dark inside and out and were stone cold. They looked like they had been refried a couple of times too. When I order fish and chips at other places I expect to wait at least 15 mins while it is cooked as you order it. Will not be going to this place again, worth making the extra trip to Parkdale...

I placed my Good Friday order online for a 4:00 PM pickup. I arrived shortly after 3:30 PM and noticed a small group of people waiting—some for pre-orders and others placing orders on the spot. It was clear that the staff were overwhelmed, but they were doing their best to manage the crowd and fulfill orders efficiently.

My order was brought out just before the scheduled pickup time. Everything was exactly as expected—the fish was perfectly battered, the chips and onion rings were cooked just right, and the coleslaw was a crowd pleaser at our table.

To those I had the company of while waiting: if you were truly that dissatisfied with the service, you had the option to take your business elsewhere. Instead, you chose to be rude and disrespectful to staff who were clearly doing their best under pressure. That kind of behaviour reflects more on you than...
