wanda's caribbean kitchen (WCK) set up shop in east hamilton, in june of 2023. great business decision to locate where they are, as there is a dearth of caribbean options in the east end section.
WCK also has a mississauga store.
imo they did a fantastic job renovating inside. you would never think it was a former chicken shawarma place or an auto repair center office. colors chosen were tastefully done, the menu is bright, all of which combines for a warm and welcoming tropical theme.
a big shout-out to mr. ozone at the front of the kitchen. 💙
he did a fantastic job greeting and welcoming all of the customers. displayed lots of enthusiasm with answering questions, and explaining what WCK is about. they have a loyalty card program, where you can get stamps with each purchase, which can eventually lead to a free dinner meal.
hours: fair and consistent, open 6 days a week, so there's plenty of opportunities to get your fixings satisfied. i really appreciate that WCK follows thru with their hours, because many other caribbean places have been erratic with operating hours, in the past.
food: i like how the food is displayed when you step inside the store. as far as portion sizes, the portions are not overly huge, but fair relative to the prices. pricing overall is fair for the area also.
what i do appreciate with what you get, is great quality food. the jerk chicken and stew gravy were fresh, and had no greasy after taste. the rice was done just right. the side of coleslaw was delicious also. made me wish there was more of it lol.
the boneless chicken curry roti was good overall. however, it was a bit sparse on chicken, a bit light on curry sauce. what stood out was the taste of the roti shell. def prepared on site and done right.
the jamaican patties were good, really enjoyed the meat sauce inside. the shell itself was tasty and had a flaky pastry taste. size of patty was good.
review date: january 18, 2024 WCK, and namely mr.ozone both continue to shine like the stars that play at the scotiabank arena. stew chicken w/rice, beef roti and the bbq chicken w/rice, macaroni and coleslaw salads, and spicy patties were all items where money was well spent.
consider grabbing a stew chicken w/rice, and ask for oxtail gravy to go with it, for a fantastic caribbean taste sensation. ⭐️
bottom line: i think that WCK is equipped to do well in the long-run in the area. they are pretty heart-attack serious, about being a heavyweight contender in the caribbean food game in the city.
reviews and feedback till now have been good, and i expect that to continue. 👏
i will be returning back to WCK , when i am in the area, to try out other menu items of interest. there is a lot of menu depth, hence there's something for everyone. be advised, they also have specialty dishes on the weekends.
i would recommend WCK to...
Read moreWandas's Carribean Kitchen I am absolutely thrilled!! After 8 years or living in Hamilton I have finally found a Carribean/Jamaican restaurant that serves up delicious tasting food with lots of options on their menu!! Growing up in Toronto I used to always go to a place at Jane and Lawrence called "Lloyds". That place served the best home cooked Jamaican food I have ever eaten and I ate there from my high-school years until well in to my 30's. After moving to Hamilton I tried a few places, but nothing came close to the quality that I loved at Lloyd's....until today!! My husband and I just picked up lunch from Wanda's Carribean kitchen on Barton (near Parkdale). We got the Ackee and Saltfish with two fried dumplings (the best fried dumplings I have ever had, even better than Lloyds), a Curry Chicken Roti and 2 patties 😋 I love me some Ackee and Salt fish and it was very good!! Apparently it is available every day until is sold out which is great as many Carribbean places only offer that dish on the weekends. The Curry Chicken roti was unreal 👌 tender stewed chicken with potatoes in a delicious roti shell. The patties were also top notch! There are lots of yummy options on the menu and prices were very reasonable and they even offer a VIP card for stamps to get a free meal! Very friendly service as well. My husband and I can't wait to go back and try more of their delcious food!! So if you're looking for excellent Carribean/Jamaican food, this...
Read moreUpdate: The Thurs - Sat. Jerk Pork!! Insanely good dish, I’ve had jerk chicken before but Jerk pork was a first trying it at Wanda’s. Its spice got a kick like a horse but I can’t stay away from it. The mac salad is a great way to cut the heat to go in for a next bite of fire.
The Goat curry is top notch. The quality of the goat meat is great. Cooked well and extremely tender like their Jerk chicken. It wasn’t spicy and had great curry flavour. Leftovers held up well after fridge and microwave. Would definitely order again if i get a craving for goat curry.
1st: A friend told me to try this places Ox tail.
First off, the option of coleslaw or mac salad was a nice surprise! Usually it’s only coleslaw. I got the Mac salad and lemme tell you that parsley on the top is not just for show. That parsley goes hard.
The rice and peas weren’t mushy or dry. Very good consistency throughout.
Now the OX. The quality of the meat is on point, no question. Same quality your mama be getting. The ox sauce is definitely different but very, very good. Borderline addicting. This is like your Mama’s cooking. Everybody gonna have a run for their money with this spot. Deliciousness!
11/10 Will be...
