I have been to Squire's many times. I would certainly not consider myself a regular by any stretch but have frequented the establishment more than 50 times over the last 10+ years. Yesterday I dropped by for a couple of draughts and purchased some squares for today's Super Bowl. I returned today to see if the the board was filled so that I could get my numbers for the big game. I am not the kind of guy to go to an establishment and not at least stay for a beverage. I sat down and noticed that the board wasn't filled and decided to purchase a couple of more squares to help fill it up. I pulled out a ten dollar bill and was then partially greeted by a blonde girl with glasses. I mentioned that I was hoping that the board was filled so that I could get my numbers. She immediately turned and walked away 5 paces and turned around and stood there staring in my direction. It felt very awkward. I said "where did you go?" and she replied "I went to get a marker". I suppose a normal person would have have went and retrieved a marker and returned without pausing and staring me down. She then proceeded to fill in my two new squares under my nickname that I used the previous evening. Upon informing her she asked " what is your real name?". Why is my real name relevant? I'm still trying to figure this one out. She then walked away without asking whether or not I required a beverage or not. I was sitting down, which to me would be a direct indication that I was staying for one and not just there for the sole purpose of retrieving my numbers. She came back and asked if I wanted anything then proceeded to pour the draught I ordered, which was two inches full of foam, and immediately said "that will be $7.50". I responded by saying " you can run me a tab because I am using debit". A few minutes later she returned and placed the debit machine in front of me and said "here you go". I felt like saying " are you trying to get rid of me?". What part of "run me a tab" did she not understand? So upon swiping my card and leaving a dollar tip despite the fact that I was less than impressed, she returned a few minutes later after the machine kept spewing out receipts and casually placed one for me on the bartop. Yes, she left without saying thank you or anything else. I'm pretty sure that this was the rudest bar staff that I have ever dealt with in my entire life. And I have been to many bars over many years. There was nothing redeeming about this person's character or personality whatsoever. I'm not sure why somebody like this would work in a hospitality position serving the public. I vow never to return to this bar again which is very unfortunate since I have always been treated in excellent fashion by very professional servers. Unfortunately this experience has left a very poor taste in my mouth. The stay was very short and...
Read moreThis is our pub normally but the Upper James location had a "manager" or whatever her title working on Saturday evening (Nov. 30) that really ruined our experience. I've never had an issue here before. We ate for 4 with a friend of 40 years in from Newmarket. After we were done eating our server (not sure her name) but she got a 20% tip from us because she was great and took our terrible sense of humor well. When we were done my friend never really checked his bill but when he did, he realized he was over charged by one wine. He went to the bar and tried to get it reversed. It was only $14.00, you would think no big deal right, it was a simple error you folks made, no big deal, easy to fix, refund the customer and we are on our way! l!!? This "manager" escalated this big time. It started off lighthearted and then she started giving him grief, I heard something so I went over and couldn't believe what I was hearing. She told him he gave the wrong card, he didn't. Then she started in on him. My son at university, worked retail and said it was probably the Apple Play. She should have known this!! This man is one of the calmest men I know, he's ex armed forces and quite high up in a bank now, calm is in his nature for what he has been employed to do...10 - 15 minutes later she was still fighting with him over $14.00....seriously. She was extremely condescending, to the point that Kevin finally started giving it back. I was trying to calm things but she continued. I went over to talk to my wife and son and finally he turned around and said he'd meet us when he was done. I thought this was the end of of it. But when they finally did refund him he told me she barred him for life. Seriously. At that point he told her to f..K off. Think about this, $14.00....he tipped more than that. He is not hurting for money, he's a well spoken, humble, educated man. We (did) go here all the time. This woman was awful and this was a terrible representative of your business....we probably go to one of your locations twice a month....love the food, the serving staff are great but this person is definitely in the wrong line of work, my family has/had been in retail in one form or another on and off for decades, my mother brought up 4 kids on tips 50 years ago, this was a first for me! All 4 of us are professionals, we do know the difference!!! I treat every working person with respect, I wish it was reciprocated on Saturday! If you wish to hear more, reach out through this review and I will...
Read moreI went there for a late supper with my father, and when we arrived at the door we waited 6 minutes for one of the five servers and hostesses standing around the bar talking to acknowledge us. One server was quite obvious about her reluctance to take us as her next table.
We were finally seated and we sat there for 7 and 1/2 minutes, I know this because I was watching the football game, finally I had to ask another server if we could order drinks. She acted like we were an enormous bother and went off and got someone. Our server finally arrived after another 2 minutes took our drink order and returned after another 6 minutes. I worked in the service industry for 15 years in many different restaurants, so I am sympathetic when a server is clearly "weeded" and struggling to meet the demands of her section. Our server was not she had one table, but apparently a whole lot of talking to do.
She finally returned with our drinks and instead of taking our food food order promptly engages in a conversation with her friends at the next table. Apparently there is big staff Christmas party the day after our dinner and that was the focus of their attention. My father literally had to wave his hand like a small child in the classroom and get her attention so we could order . food.
The food arrived, the potato skins were not deep fried like she said, but were hot and my wings were cooked appropriately. Nothing spectacular but nothing terrible. Just mediocre if slightly disappointing. my father asked our server for a side of barbecue sauce for his skins which he consumed and asked for a second side which didn't arrive until he was done eating. Apparently our server was busy talking, again.
This is not the first time I've had slowed to mediocre service at this pub. Upon leaving two other patrons were standing in the doorway smoking and there was no sign posted telling them they needed to be 3M from the door. The parking lot is small and difficult to navigate anyways, which while not the restaurant's responsibility it is it another factor ensuring that I...
