Since I was down in Niagara I couldn't resist stopping in at RPM Bakehouse. Last night I got there near close and most of their baked goods were sold out but I had a Blackberry Sable and the Beef Brisket sandwich. Both were very good, and the bun on the Sandwich really stole the show. Sadly the slaw and sauce on the bottom slice turned it super soggy before I could finish half the sandwich. The hibiscus ice tea was wonderful too.
This morning I stopped in again on my way home and arrived just in time for open. I had a serviceable but unremarkable chai latte and a breakfast sandwich. There were a lot of snafus with the lady taking my order and I had to repeat my order 3 times, and then she forgot to put the sandwich in the system so it took over half an hour to get my sandwich. Despite all that it was worth the wait. It was without a doubt the best breakfast sandwich I have had in my life (Mind you for $14 it better be!) The bun had the perfect blend of texture lamination and tender chew. The homemade sausage patty was so flavourful and perfectly seasoned. The egg and cheese were at just the right level of softness. Then there were notes of sweet and spicy in the sauce that all just played together in an absolutely amazing way.
Before I left I ordered a variety of pastries. I ate the choux there because it was too delicate to take with me. The whipped cream was fresh and had a floral note that I couldn't identify infused in that was absolutely incredible. Beneath that were fresh cherries in custard all sitting inside a choux bun with perfect softness and structure for the dish. The whole thing was gone in seconds, but I thought about it all the way home.
At home Anna helped me sample the rest of the pastries. The much hyped sticky bun was pillowy soft and covered in wonderful toffee bits, I only wish I had eaten it while it was still warm. The croissant had excellent lamination and good butter flavour but I would still prefer local examples like Sabletine or Golden Hearth. The strawberry Danish once again showed wonderful lamination skills and really made great use of local produce including flower petals on top that played wonderfully with the strawberries. The savoury cheese biscuit was soft and flakey with great cheese flavour and I again regretted not having it fresh and warm.
It was definitely worth the stop over on my trip, and the breakfast sandwich was worth a trip just on its own. I can't wait to come back and try the full restaurant in August.
A few notes: Lots of parking next door and Jordan station is a very nice but surprisingly bougie strip to mosey through. The pastries were almost completely sold out in the afternoon with only a few sables and financiers left to pick from, but I also learned not to arrive too early as many of their best items took atleast and hour to become available after the doors open. I would aim for 10am for peak availability.
The restaurant/bakery was VERY busy so be prepared to wait in line and service was on the slower side so leave time if you want to eat there. You can also order bakery good the day before but only include their staples and not whatever of the day creations they...
Read moreSmall interior with the baked goods near the entrance and provided small menu selection for lunch, breakfast, and beverage. At the back is an open space where the meal is prepared. Services - I see mixed faces some pleasant and others just having a day. The one taking the order is friendly and kind. I ordered the braised brisket sandwich and rutabaga fritters. Also, a tart and a latte spice something (forgot the name). Made the payment for dine in and was given a flag number. Took a table out on the patio and the tables inside were occupied. The day was overcast with a light wind on occasion. Tried the tart and the meringue was good balance in the sweet flavour. The yellow part seemed more peachy texture and flavour was not sure but nice. It was difficult to cut through the tart and almost had the tart slide off the plate. Overall ok. A gentleman brought the latte spice and was polite. The latte was enjoyable and I have to try it again as I am not a latte person but really like the blend of taste and aroma. The sandwich and fritters took some time and was brought out from their kitchen staff and the person took care of how the plate was placed and presented on the table. The decor on the fritters was lovely and in my mind did question about rutabaga as it is my first time hearing about it and tasting it. The brisket sandwich had the fresh greens colour which caught my eyes. I did see the fresh chips and I wished I had more. Overall presentation does give the vibe that has been harvested from the farm/ garden. The flavour and taste - the fritters is a yes I would order it again. It is not a heavy meal nor an oily meal. The sour cream, fresh crunch leaves, and the light seasoned fritters worked nicely. Maybe wished the fritters flavour can be enhanced a bit more as the sour cream would overtake in the bite. The brisket sandwich - the greens dressed, tender meat and picked onions and the bread really good. There were some bites the pickled onions were a bit salty or over took the surrounding flavour and just tasted solely the pickled onions alone. Overall both plates looks great and tasted good. As I was leaving there seems to be a wait in line to...
Read moreIt had been years since our last visit to Jordan so we decided to take our adult granddaughter to look around. We were looking forward to a nice lunch at RPM Bakery since we used to eat there often a few years back. What a disappointment! Upon arriving we noticed every table inside and outside was busy and people were lining up. We asked a passing waiter where the host/hostess was so we could get on the wait list. He had no idea. He suggested we keep an eye out for an empty table and grab it. Really? We waited and finally got a table inside but we’re told to place our orders at the counter. Very limited menu but being hungry we ordered. My wife and granddaughter opted for the upscale grilled cheese with pesto. Almost no cheese, a smattering of pesto and ….wait for it….something completely unexpected….big chewy, tough cabbage leaf. It was cooked cabbage but cold and pretty much inedible. The ladies were not impressed. These and my chicken salad sandwich came with some mesclun mix. That’s it! Oh, and when they brought our meals I asked about cutlery and was told to go get them and cafeteria type napkins at the end of the room. For this I paid almost $70.00. Drinks you ask; two ordinary coffees and a glass of water. Chaos is a mild descriptor for this place. Service was abominable and food was an expensive joke on us. If you want to try to entice repeat customers you may wish to hire a dining room professional who can get you organized and actually make your guests feel welcome and valued. At the moment neither is true. A lovely afternoon in Jordan but what could have been a special memory with our granddaughter is nothing more than...
