August 20/15
I love to support local business in any way I can, particularly food establishments where work is long and hot, and profits are low.
I landed at Bocado a few weeks ago when their flyer ended up sticking to my windshield after a few days of harsh weather. The owner, whom I’ll call Danny, kindly removed the stuck portion that I hadn’t been able to. He mentioned they’d only opened recently, so I made a mental note to bring them some business sooner than later.
In celebration last Saturday Aug. 16/15, I brought my mum to Bocado. She ordered the ½ chicken and I ordered the fish of the day. As the waiter approached with my fish, I got a distinct rank smell of bacteria. I pulled a corner of the fish away with my fork to discover it was dry and hard. Putting my plate aside, I discreetly mentioned to the waiter that the fish was off. He didn’t have anything else to offer me, so I returned to my table and tried to eat the vegetables, the last mouthful of which ended up fully in my napkin, the stench of the fish having permeated it. I had to scrub my hands twice later at home, just from the napkin seepage.
When the bill arrived Bocado charged our table fully for the fish, $30.00. I went straight to the waiter where he explained to me they’d checked their stock and their fish was fine, therefore I would have to pay for the meal. He walked away. Huh? The thing was, my 84 year old mother who’s on a fixed income, and whom we were celebrating the end of her cancer treatment, was paying. She doesn’t see well, and she frightens easily. I asked her not to pay but she was incapable of doing anything else.
Later that evening I called to speak to the owner. I was told by my waiter that the owner wasn’t available, and that he had already been informed of the situation. I had to ask him four times for the owner’s name before he gave me the name of ‘Danny’.
I kept going over it in my head, how could the cook pass that fish out of his kitchen and not know it wasn’t rancid. How? None of it made sense. How could they not know?
Then it hit me. They did know. This was payback for my asking him for help in removing his stuck flyer; an act of some great, yet small measure.
None of this means Bocado’s food isn’t good. Just don’t get on ‘Danny’s’ bad side. And if you do, don’t eat at his restaurant.
I only support community that supports me back. ...

The food is absolutely incredible — every dish bursts with authentic flavors and is clearly prepared with care and pride. From the perfectly grilled seafood to the tender meats and traditional sides, everything feels both comforting and elevated. Portions are generous, beautifully presented, and leave you wanting to try everything on the menu.
What truly sets this restaurant apart, though, is the owner Danny. He doesn’t just run the place — he lives it. Warm, attentive, and genuinely passionate, he takes the time to make sure every guest feels valued and cared for. You can tell he pours his heart into both the food and the experience, and that personal touch makes all the difference.
It’s rare to find a restaurant where the food and the hospitality are equally unforgettable, but this gem has both. Whether you’re Portuguese and craving a taste of home, or new to the cuisine and eager to explore, you’ll leave with a full stomach and a happy heart.

Read moreWe came in sort of early for take out supper as we had visitors from the US who wanted Portuguese chicken. We were not disappointed! Meal was prepared while we waited by very friendly staff and was delicious! Now we won't go into town for our chicken. Fries and salad were excellent too, will definitely go back. Update: Revisited on Thursday July 13th, 2023. Had visitors from the US who wanted to go into town, but I said NO, lets go back to Bocado. We arrived at 1:44, were told bruskly, WE MIGHT NOT HAVE ENOUGH. We are closing at 3pm til 5. Kids had already sat down at a table. The guy said we can order take out. The kids had already sat down, guy says," HEY don't touch the silverware on the table, we will have to change it." We ordered 2 family meals. $98 tax included 4 breasts, 4 legs, 2 plates of fries, and 2 salads of mixed greens with a tablespoon of red pickled onion. We probably won't ever go back, solely because of the way he treated us. I understand nobody is perfect, but when you have customers standing in front of you don't push them out the door and hour and 15 minutes...
