5 stars for their bread and tofu cheese cake, and 1 star for their service.
I enjoy so much of their tofu cheese cake, and I will always come back for it. Their bread is very fresh and tasty but it's just ordinary bread and just like all those asian's grocery store bread. However, I didn't enjoy their service, as the cashier guy who wear glasses and speaks english and "maybe Japanese?" is very rushy, rude and kinda disrespectful by giving me look. It's a very unpleasure experience since I have been to this bakery so many times and this is my first time getting this kind of vibe. I went there with my family and ordered a loaf of bread and i requested half a loaf and cut to sandwich thickness, he told me they only offer whole loaf now, so I was like okay so I will get a whole loaf, then he told me that they can't cut it to sandwich thickness and offered me to cut it to toast, then i was like okay. As he was talking, he didn't even make eye contact with me and busy with other thing and talking to other which is fine cuz I can tell that they are busy. I guess he was talking to me but I can't hear him well cuz he kept moving back and forth while talking behind the counter , then he was like " So what do you want?" I was like "okay then I will get the whole loaf with toast thickness" then he kinda gave me this look and make me feel like Im stupid or annoying. We all wearing mask during pandemic and sometimes we just can't hear each other properly. Honestly, no need to be rude to your customer when I already told you what I want and it was according to the menu but YOU CAN"T OFFER ANYTHING I WANT! at the end, when the lady cut the loaf for me she just cut half, and she forgot the other half. Clearly I can just get half a loaf instead of the whole loaf.
If I see this man ever again when I go there to shop, I...
Read moreYou could be forgiven for thinking the cakes are the real treat here: not too sweet, impossibly delicate flavours, cloud-like softness... All the things you would hope for from a Japanese cake.
The real star for me though is the savory faire. The variety of asian-style buns filled with a selection of meats, creams, and curries. You might sample the wasabi sausage bun - a slightly spicy, soft bun with a hot dog running through it; or perhaps the bacon bun - a crusted treat that contains a solid strip of bacon running throughout it. The mix of crust, sponge, flavour, and umami is something you would expect from a travel food show. Can you get these style buns other places in Toronto? Yes. But are they as good without the critical component that Nakamura does so well? The bread.
All of these treats are good because of their fillings but it is the quality of the bread that elevates them to exceptional.
This bakery has some of the best bread in the city. 3 basic loaves and 2 specialty loaves are there to choose from; the basic loaves are available in full or half loafs and are sliced to order. I recommend the French Loaf sliced to 1 inch - once you make Sunday toast with this bread, it will be hard to enjoy another!
Up for lunch? There are a variety of meals available for sale, from pre-packaged BBQ dishes to breaded cutlets on rice. If you want to include their house made bread, it's hard to go wrong with a classic Katsu Sandwhich - crispy breaded cutlet served simply on toasted bread with Japanese mayo and pickles. If there are better examples of how good simple ingredients can be when done well, I can't...
Read moreI had brunch at Tanuki's and decided to stop by Bakery Nakamura and picked up some baked goodies. Bakery Nakamura is Toronto's first Japanese bakery established in 1993. Located in the J-Town complex in Markham, they are committed to making wholesome products that are made with fresh, natural ingredients. All their products are made daily from scratch with no preservatives or additives used in the process. You can actually watch them make their baked goods from their open-concept kitchen.
I must said Bakery Nakamura strong suits are in their breads and amazing cakes and they never disappoint. As for the buns, it seems to be a hit and miss for me as the buns are never as fresh no matter what time and day I go. Not a big deal since I can always put them in the oven when I get home but I have yet to get my hands on a freshly baked bun. Maybe it is just my bad luck? The buns though are super cute and too adorable to eat. One of their best seller is the turtle bun that they ran out already that day.
I also couldn't resist picking up a mango roll cake ($22) I think it was worth every penny though as the roll cake was the best I ever had with just the right amount cream and it wasn't too sweet. Also, I can never said...
