Not entirely sure why there are so many negative reviews of this place - are people expecting a high-end banh mi stuffed with filling? I feel like people should know what to expect with a $5 banh mi, especially in today's economy. Was it the best banh mi I've had? No. Was it the worst? Also no. Did I have any pre-conceived expectations on what I would get with this banh mi? Triple no.
I knew it was cheap, so I knew what to expect. For a $5 banh mi? it's actually pretty good. You get what you pay for, especially if it's a "hole in the wall" in an Asian mall.
Majority of the clientele that were in line before us were of the older generation of Asians. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.
The service was actually phenomenal. The lady taking our order was quick, attentive, spoke English, Vietnamese, and Cantonese. We got our banh mi's within 30 seconds of ordering. The only wait was that the line was a little long when we were there, but we were in and out within 15-20 minutes - given the "hype" and cheap prices.
All in all, I would come back to grab one due to the sheer price of it and definitely would recommend to...
Read moreThere seems to be an explosion of banh mi shops this past summer in Scarborough, Markham, and Richmond hill. Coincidence? All of them are hole in the wall. Keep your expectations low. It's street food, no seating, no frills, curt service.
Bang mi Vietnam offers a good value over a foot long sandwich. The cold cut trio is only $5. It was premade when I got there at 3pm. Ham, sausage, and fatty bacon (a rarity). Having eaten the supermarket frozen version for years, this is great! How long they can maintain this. Shrinkage is only inevitable.
I also had the grilled beef for$7. Good value. Beef was already cooked and had a sweet taste. One is enough to stuff you.
The bad. The bread is chewy as others have said. My mouth got a real workout. It was 3pm. Toasting it at home did improve it. Perhaps if you buy it in the morning it will be crispy. The service is terse. The owner barely made eye contact. She handled food and money. Yikes! There was no cash register or receipt. It's street...

The ingredients inside of sandwiches are good and tasty. However, their bread…. Hard, stale, from frozen or left overnight out. Not sure but the bread was not good!! And it is very important the quality of bread. I mean a minimum to match the Vietnamese sandwich. My jaw was exhausted after finishing the sandwich…
If they could improve the quality of their bread, yes it could be a little gem. Because the pate was good too.
If you don’t enter by the right entrance it may be challenging to find it. I didn’t have to downstairs where it seems to have a supermarket.
The service was pretty fast. Many classic sandwich was already prepared. The special meat ones (beef, chicken etc) are given cold.
There was some line. No seats available. This is a to do place only.
I think for the price, it’s still ok to stop by and try eating...
