BlueBay Fish & Wings — Restaurant in Markham

NEVER AGAIN. If you are in the Markham area and looking for fish and chips, highly recommend Danny's Fish & Chips, about a 10 minute drive away from Bluenose. I hadn't eaten here in maybe a decade and today, I was reminded why. I needed to grab a quick lunch and the Subway restaurant next door was packed so decided to grab fish & chips from Bluenose, which by the way was empty at 12:45 pm.

The nice lady who was helping me with my order, politely answered a question I had and out of nowhere and when I chose a less expensive meal option, the owner stormed over and made a passive aggressive comment about me not being able to make a decision. He spoke directly to the lady (I think it's his mother?), at the top of his lungs, while I was standing right there. "Just tell them, we cut the halibut here and the cod is pre-cut. If they can't make a decision, don't even bother with them". I literally asked ONE question. If not for the nice lady (and needing to get back to work), I would have turned and walked out.

I'm SO put off about this horrible customer service and wish I hadn't supported his business. I would never recommend this place, the food wasn't even that great and I certainly didn't feel welcome or like a valued customer here. There are so many other small businesses around this area that welcome customers warmly and truly value your business. Please try to keep some of those businesses open instead of supporting this rude, passive aggressive and ungrateful owner.

If I could leave zero...

I have been living in Markham for the past 25 years and have always meant to try this place. Finally I had the time and was in the neighbourhood, it was time to give it shot. It is a family run place and you can tell they are really trying to maintain quality of food. The taste of the food is okay, nothing special.

The man with glasses at the front (believe he’s the owner) is rude and rushes on just getting the food out. He is disrespectful and is not friendly with new customers. I sat in the restaurant and observed his interactions as I had my meal. Instead of the server, he brought my meal and when I tried to ask for a napkin he just dropped my plate and ran away. I was spoken to rudely and when I asked a question about the menu and price, he barked at me. Clearly he is only nice to the customers that come there often, but not sure why they have regular clientele.

The server, bless her heart, was by herself, was rushed because of the number of tables and could not speak English very well. She recommended something more expensive than the lunch menu price and I could not ask her any questions because she just ran off to put in the order and did not understand my question.

Bluenose Fish & Chips is not worth spending your hard earned money because the service is terrible and the food taste is not worth the trouble. This place will only last because of customers who have been going there for a while. If you are new, you might as well go to the Subway...

Upon entering the restaurant carrying a sandwich from Subway next door and proceeded to order small fries. After paying, I sat down to wait for my food to be prepared. While I was waiting, an elderly woman, who the new owners inherited from the previous owners, informed me that I was not permitted to bring outside food into the establishment. She explained that it was considered impolite to do so. I politely stood up, told her that I would leave and requested a refund. However, the woman proceeded to lecture me on restaurant etiquette and touched my arm and placed her hand on my food. The person working behind the counter appeared to find this interaction amusing, which further upset me. Consequently, I left the restaurant without receiving a refund or my food. Several years ago, when the restaurant was known as Bluenose Fish & Chips, I stopped patronizing it due to the woman’s consistently rude demeanor and comments. Her involvement in the restaurant was a significant factor in my decision to not return many years ago. Returning with the expectation of a fresh experience, given that the restaurant is now under new management, proved to be a mistake. The service and overall experience were abysmal. I can only recommend that customers avoid this establishment and seek a more satisfactory dining experience elsewhere where the staff have respect for their patrons and keep their hands and opinions to themselves....
