Introduction: As a food enthusiast always on the lookout for delightful culinary experiences, I recently stumbled upon a gem - Crispy Taiwanese Chicken - and boy, was I in for an unforgettable gastronomic adventure! Nestled in a cozy corner of the city, this unassuming eatery proved that simple ingredients and skillful execution could elevate a dish to an extraordinary level. Let's dive into the delightful world of Crispy Taiwanese Chicken and explore its tantalizing flavors and crunchy perfection! Atmosphere: The moment I stepped inside the restaurant, I was enveloped in a warm and welcoming ambiance. The rustic yet modern décor created a pleasant setting for a casual meal with friends or a cozy date night. The tantalizing aroma of the crispy chicken wafted through the air, preparing my taste buds for the flavors to come. The Main Attraction - Crispy Taiwanese Chicken: Oh, the sight of the Crispy Taiwanese Chicken was enough to make my mouth water! Presented beautifully on a wooden platter, the golden-brown exterior of the chicken showcased the promise of a perfectly crunchy bite. One look at the chef's meticulous attention to detail was enough to assure me that this was going to be an exceptional culinary experience. Texture and Crunch: The first bite of the Crispy Taiwanese Chicken was pure bliss! The skin was crackling, shattering into a satisfying crunch that gave way to tender and succulent meat beneath. It was evident that the chicken had been masterfully marinated to infuse every morsel with flavors that lingered on the palate, leaving a delightful umami taste. Flavorful Marinade: The secret to the success of this dish undoubtedly lay in its flavorful marinade. The blend of Taiwanese spices and herbs balanced harmoniously, with hints of garlic, ginger, and a touch of soy adding depth to the chicken's taste. The marinade had seeped into the meat, resulting in an explosion of flavors with each bite.

Heard this place had opened up and just had to check it out! Awesome hk style cafe food and with a nice little twist on many classic dishes alongside a nice vibe and aesthetic. The food comes out really nicely presented for many special looking dishes! The baked bread curry with pasta was such a nice idea and the hk curry was actually nice and thick and even had a little kick to it If you get the appetizers, they come out on this little scale which I have never seen before and thought that was super innovative! And makes for great pictures too! The hottest thing right now to hit hk cafes are pineapple bun sandwiches that are leveled up! And this one was doused in a peanut butter sauce and with a chicken cutlet. The combination of flavours worked so well and made my tastebuds really happy! Too full to get dessert, but definitely will be back for some of those toasts! The place is just outstanding! With a ton of visual appeal on the walls including a mahjong tile wall as you’re heading to the restroom. Service was great, however it did take some time for my dish to come out and long enough for me to know that they had possibly forgotten the order, but they came out apologizing for the wait and the taste of the food totally made the experience that much better! Great job overall! Follow me on IG @thirst_and_taste for better pics, vids and more amazing content!

Had experienced this place twice. First time via take out and tried a second time in person. TLDR: Go for the experience but keep expectations low when it comes to the food. If you like HK Cafe style food this place is just average and the younger waitstaff are not all fluent in Cantonese or HK Food ordering terms. You'll have to be patient and speak in English or if you're lucky they will send the auntie who is fluent in HK Cantonese to wait on your table. 1) take out E14 Peanut Butter Condensed Milk Toast * Believe the pictures - for $5.99 CAD you get ONE square slice of white bread covered in PB and condensed milk as you'd ordered. I was floored and thought my BF ate half of it but turns out it's no lie when I saw the menu ...that photo is ONE SINGLE slice of bread.... A real HK Cafe would have it as a sandwich meaning two slices of bread with the spreadables inside.. 2) dine in for four H03 Pepper with Hog Maw and Chicken Hot pot * This came tepid at best and was sitting over a small flame which burnt out before the soup could come to a boil. Taste is great for this if you like lots of peppercorns but sadly the soup gets cold very quickly. Also the waitress was struggling to place the dish down so becafeful. H01 Crispy Grilled Steak w/ Black Truffle (黑松露+牛排+白醬) * The HK Cafe version of a Beef Wellington I suppose. This was seasoned well and piping hot so overall a good dish. Couldn't taste the truffle and did not even expect that realistically, this is a cafe so maintain a reasonable set of expectations. C11 Baked Cheese Pork Chop w/spaghetti *Pork chop was cooked well, reasonably seasoned and crispy on the outside. Although, the cheese spaghetti was just warm inside and tasted bland. C03 Cheese Curry Beef in Baked Bread Bowl (with Baked Rice) *This came out hot and was glad the rice inside was also hot. No issues with the desserts. Good job on that one. No expectations but it tasted as expected. You can see in the pictures -F03 Coconut Milk with Grass Jelly Sago & Taro Ball (椰汁芋圓涼粉西米露 ) -F08 Bunny Milk Pudding Coffee that came with one of the dishes was also cold - had to ask for them to reheat it 🤣. Also the waitstaff 1 of 3 that night could speak canto and sounded right but didn't know the term for black coffee in Chinese "齋啡" when receiving the order so we had to explain in english... Overall I had no diarrhea so lucky me, but I'd rather go to a less flashy place with well prepared and hot cooked HK Cafe dishes. There is no reason to return to this location. The sugar water cafe beside this place also serves lukewarm dishes if you like that temperature for foods.

Yet another gimmicky HK style cafe. I was very much intrigued when I saw 叉燒豬油拌飯 on the menu coz my mom always mentioned how awesome 豬油拌飯 was back in the days. I immediately ordered a takeout to surprise her. It turned out very disappointing coz my mom said she didn't taste any 豬油 aroma in it at all. So basically I paid $16 for an ordinary 叉燒飯. Huh. Another thing got me deducting stars: how unorganized the restaurant was when dealing with takeout orders. I ordered on their website ahead of time. When I was there to pick up, the staff asked for my order number, then she went straight to the kitchen. It's reasonable for me to assume that she was fetching my order...right? So I waited for her to come back... 5 mins passed...ok, maybe my order wasn't ready yet...10 mins passed...still nothing. Then another staff saw me standing there so she asked if I needed help. I gave her my order number, then she took a look under the desk near reception, and found my order along with other takeout orders. My order was sitting there the whole time I was waiting!?! I had so many questions at that moment: Why the first staff didn't look under the desk? Why she went to the kitchen and never came back? I was too tired already to say or ask anything. There's some other items on the menu that definitely catch my eyes, but due to the service, food quality and high price tags, I'm not sure if I want to visit this restaurant again.

EDIT: Returned a few times to try their different dishes and bumping my rating to 3*. I only actually like the curry pork chop rice in bread bowl here. Their other dishes are super rich and heavy, lacks depth of flavour and service is lacking. I tried the golden cheese pork chop instant noodles which was basically cheese whiz instant noodles which was soooo processed. looked nothing like the picture. *** Finally gave this spot a try after the hype has gone down and hopefully addressed some of the food handling issues previous reviewers mentioned. Had a pretty good experience when we came in for a late lunch. Got the curry pork chop rice in bread bowl and the baked fish with Alfredo sauce rice. The curry bread bowl was really good, with lots of flavour and the bread had a nice crisp to it. The baked fish dish wasn't as good, a bit bland yet heavy and the rice was a bit too soft. They also don't do a fried rice base for their baked dishes. They also only use plastic/styrofoam cups, even for water, even for dine in which is unnecessarily wasteful. Also hope management will consider adding an option to upgrade the drinks to one of their specialty drinks for a few dollars more. There is currently only the option to upgrade to a cold drink for $1.5 but will have to order the specialty ones a la carte which doesn't make sense for meals that already come with one.

The concept intrigues, and the atmosphere is indeed a fun one so it suits a group/social vibe very well. The food on the other hand is alright. We all enjoyed what we ordered but I wouldn't say any of the dishes impressed. The taste is not consistent from visit-to-visit, and in my opinion, some dishes are more worth ordering than others. For example, if you have access to/can make at home a good meat and preserved vegetable rice dish, skip it at Mabu because their version of it is only ok (leaves something to be desired. The flavour is two-dimensional at best). You're better off ordering such traditional dishes elsewhere. The udon noodles were a 5/10, the flavour had an instant ramen quality and the noodles themselves were plainly average in texture. Other funky items, which can be found throughout the menu, and the personal hot pot dishes as well are probably better executed. And, the novelty would, I think, offer a better experience. I recommend this restaurant for the atmosphere, especially if you're seeking out a social setting for dinner. Be mindful of your expectations with the food and what you order. The service was alright. We would've appreciated all of the food being brought out within a closer time interval. The first dish arrived nearly 10 minutes before the second. Then from there the fifth and last one came still later.
