I have never had a problem with Double Happiness before, but that changed on Sunday. I spent fourteen years working for a Cantonese owned business in my youth, so I developed a taste for certain Cantonese dishes that most people don't order because we would go out to eat after work at their friend's Chinese restaurant. One of these dishes is Salt and Pepper Squid. Double Happiness is the only place in Midland that serves this dish, and I order it quite regularly. What I received last night was not fit to feed to raccoons. They have changed their product due to supply issues, according to the person on the phone. They should not be serving this at all! Firstly it had an overpowering fish odour mixed with a chemical tang. I took a bite out of one, and discovered that they did not remove the cartilage/gladius. So I could not bite through it due to that, and that piece, and every piece had it still in the squid. It is like a strip of plastic akin to a rubber band. I took another and ate it whole. Which I will regret later. I noticed a chemical taste as well, and found that the 3rd, and 4th piece had this cartilage as well as I tore them open with my hands. I assumed every piece was like this. I called the restaurant not to complain, but to politely inform them of this, and to let them know that thay should not serve this to anybody as it is inedible. The person on the phone was nice, and asked me to hold so that they can speak to their manager and work out a discount on my next order. They left me on hold - ignoring me - for 30 minutes! When I finally hung up and tried to call again they would not answer the phone. I gave up on this and went back to eat the remainder of my meal - beef with broccoli - which was now cold. Still, that chemical taste was on my mouth and tongue from the squid, and even was 'burning' my tongue. The rest of the squid went straight to my compost bin (as seen in the 2nd picture), as it was inedible garbage. I was up half the night with food poisoning from the squid. It was disgusting. One and a half eaten pieces had made me so sick! Even this morning as I write this my stomach is still cramped and that chemical taste is still on my tongue! Based on this treatment which shows that they don't care, as well as the fact that they would serve this poisonous garbage to their paying customers, I will NEVER order from them again. They obviously have no respect for their customers or their community! I am also shocked that they would not even offer a refund but only a discount on a future order. As a former bar/restaurant owner this blows my mind. I would never serve an inferior product to a guest at my restaurant and I have offered a refund or complementary meal for far less than what I have encountered at Double Happiness. They should be ashamed of themselves for serving trash to...
Read moreNot one to complain and the food is not the issue, bit pricey for such small containers, but this is a complaint on customer service, which needs serious attention and need for phone training from staff. Its boxing day and we decided Chinese it is. We called and ordered pick up and was told it would be about 45 minutes cause they were busy. I get it no problem. The bill was 80 dollars and we called back within 10 minutes to make some changes because wife ordered too much food. The Girl on the phone questioned my wife why we are changing our food and that the order is almost done (10 minutes into 45) and then she got rude, I hear this and the wife handed me the phone. I stated we want to change a few things and its only been 10 minutes and begin by requesting first to take 4 egg rolls off the order (easy to do) she got rude and sarcastically laughed saying you really want to take off 4 egg rolls? with this ignorant abrupt rudeness to my wife and her sarcastic laugh, I replied no, take off everything and informed her that I will be reaching out to her employer and let him know of her rudeness and because of her attitude, her boss lost about 70 dollars.. I remember this person's voice from 2 weeks prior and she is not polite at all, terrible phone presentation. Now here is a place for retraining, remember without us customers you have no job; you are here to help us, we are not here for you or an inconvenience to your ??... I hope the owner takes this serious, we will see. From my past orders, the food is good, bit expensive for such little portions, but is tasty. Not all negative, but Pizza was our meal change, they were appreciative to...
Read moreI've been coming to/ordering from this place for the past 5 years and here are my thoughts.
Food:
Decent Chinese food with enough options to make it a unique experience. Take out portion sizes are generous, with decent amount of meat and veggies to go along with the rice/noodles. The Cantonese chow mein is a good dish to try. The Bo Bo platter is a nice appetizer with different fried finger foods. The house fried rice is also another good option. Their special combination plate dinners could easily feed 2-3 people as well. They also offer North American food like burgers and fries, but I haven't tried any to make a comment.
Price: Their prices have increased but are on par with other Chinese restaurants in the area. I wish they would update their website, as you have to search the internet for a menu (which are based on old cheaper prices and is one reason why customers are surprised when they order a meal which is more expensive). I've added their updated menu on my review, which is practically the same as the old menu, with their newer prices.
Service: I haven't had any rude experiences with staff when dining in our ordering over the phone. I would suggest updating their voicemail to reflect their holiday hours (or not having a voicemail at all). I haven't had to wait long to receive my order for take out
Bottom line, food is decent with practically something for everyone, service is good, and the prices (although more expensive) are on par with other restaurants. I'll definitely order from them again until my experience is less...
