I have been wanting to visit for a while, glad we decided to stop by today with a visitor for his first Hakka food experience.
The owner (I believe) was very friendly and informative. He made some great recommendations, explained some questions we had about the meals and then suggested some dishes that would go well together.
We had the chicken momos which were delicious, the sauce that comes with them are perfect, one has lots of flavour and the other one was very spicy, well balanced. This plate took a while to come out but the owner came over to let us know in advance, which I appreciate.
Schezuan Noodles, we chose medium and the owner explained the spice level, which was very helpful, these are a bit spicy, but I love spicy food and often add hot sauce to all my meals so even the medium one might be too spicy for someone with low spice tolerance. Noodles were great and not overly oily like at other places.
We asked about the difference between Chili Beef and Ginger Beef, the owner explained nicely but then also suggested the Mongolian Beef Sizzler might be better to compliment the Schezuan noodles so we went with that. The meat was super tender and tasty, though a bit salty for my taste, overall it paired well with the noodles.
We also tried their house lager, was actually really good.
The only cons: We sat on one of the booths at the back, the sitting bench was so uncomfortable, the seat felt like hollow and as if you're sitting against the wood section, was hard getting up. Room temperature water, water was not offered but once we asked for it they came over to refill, which was nice. Cold water or ice in the glass would've been better, specially with the spicy dishes and the place not being cold at all.
All in all, we will definitely return but will choose to sit at a different location. It's definitely worth the try and even better if you speak with the owner for recommendations. All their portions were big, more than enough for the 3 of us, and we definitely...
Read moreOverview: This restaurant is such a gem hidden amongst rocks. It’s a cozy family owned and operated restaurant with very friendly staff and each dish was delicious.
The vibe: The owner served us from the beginning to the end with the best customer service. He catered to my family in every way and gave us his undivided attention. He had the perfect sense of when to come to us/speak to us without overdoing it to the point where it’s annoying. He gave us a lot of extra things to try and out of everything, everyone MUST TRY their home made chutney.
The food: As I mentioned before, the food just got better and better. I’ve never been to a place where the flavours and consistency of the quality of food just kept getting better. I ended up over eating because I impulsively just kept getting more dishes to try because they were soooo good.
We started with lollipop chicken - instant 10/10 with their home chutney and sweet chilli sauce.
We then got the Hakka fried rice served with Manchurian prawn and butter chicken. The rice was amazing and a 9/10 while the other two dishes were instant 10/10.
Lastly we got the Mongolian beef sizzler and Shanghai noodles which were both 20/10 and. 11/10 respectively!!!
The Mongolian beef was so tender and melted right into your mouth while being so juicy and tasty. I’ve never in my life tasted this quality of beef for such a reasonable price, definitely a steal just in that regard.
Overall, this is the kind of place that will keep you coming back time and time again without getting tired of it.
I’d personally like to thank Prem for the excellent service we got and the...
Read moreMela Kitchen is a Hakka cuisine restaurant right in Clarkson village. Overall, my experience there was okay however the service was easily the standout/highlight for this restaurant.
When we walked in, we were greeted right away by what I assume was the owner. He was very attentive the entire time, often making sure we had everything and enough water, etc. Atmosphere was also very nice.
We went in for their lunch special, and had the Manchurian chicken and General Tao chicken specials. As it's Hakka, the restaurant buys halal meat. Both were priced at $10.99, and it was slightly higher than other hakka places by $1-2 depending on the location. It's likely higher given that there is a complimentary hot and sour soup with the meal. The food in general was also good, but in general and why I'm giving 3 stars for the review is primarily as a result of the quantity of food served. While there was a fairly decent amount of protein/chicken served, the amount of rice was considerably less in comparison to other hakka locations.
If they provided more rice, it would easily bump it up to 4 stars. I left feeling satisfied after the lunch, but not necessarily fulfilled like I usually do after getting Hakka (usually they give enough that it's around 1.5-2 the amount I would eat for lunch). It could easily be 5 stars if the quality of the sauce and rice was also improved as well, just felt like slightly...
