Tried House of Lam for dinner today for the first time. I ordered the Szechuan Platter (delivery/pick-up order). So here's the breakdown of my review:
Taste: Fantastic taste. Everything was full of flavour and you could tell it was of high quality ingredients as well as a very good chef in the back. I've tried numerous Chinese restaurants in all of Fredericton, Oromocto, and now Moncton (2 so far) and I would say taste-wise House of Lam was the best.
Service: Great service. Lady was very polite and attentive on the phone and offered different options to me as I was a bit indecisive. They are also very flexible with items in their combos so you can remove and/or add different items if you wish. When I got there to pick up the order I waited for about 1-2 minutes and it was ready. Restaurant was also very nice looking. Not your typical hole in the wall mom and pop chinese restaurant. I would classify them as a higher-end Chinese restaurant.
Value: So here's where the weak point is for House of Lam and I can only provide feedback based on the "delivery/pick-up" portions and not the "dine-in" portions. So when I opened the take-out container I knew right away that the portions provided would only be good enough for one meal which is understandable considering it is a bit of a higher end chinese restaurant so a smaller portion was expected, however I am used to making at least 2 meals every time I order a dish for only myself from a Chinese restaurant so was a bit disappointed. Rice is probably the cheapest item in a Chinese restaurant so was surprised that they were so tight with the fried rice portion and so plentiful with the more expensive chicken and vegetables. I found myself finishing the small portion of fried rice too quickly and had so much leftover of the chicken and vegetables which is a downer if you have no fried rice left to eat it with. The good news is there is a very easy way to fix this - MORE FRIED RICE!
For $23 all in for the Szechuan Platter, the only way I become a consistent customer at House of Lam is if they increased the fried rice portion in their delivery/take-out platters. And if they can do that then I would give them 5 stars...
Read moreBad experience! Was at the House of Lamb prior to today's visit and the food was OK. Today, I went there for lunch and was offered to take the buffet ($15.95), as it is the same price as a full plate (quote). The said buffet is made of a small table with wonton soup (absolutely tasteless), lonely spring rolls in a metal container. Beside this table, the extend of the buffet is a typical piece of furniture which holds warm containers. Is is about 5 feet long and you have a choice of 6 items. rice.... cold and dry fried things... could not figure what they were chicken legs... they looked so good that I did not even try chicken balls... acceptable Chinese pork... so so! Ribs.... tough vegetable... soggy and cold other vegetables... in competition with the other veggies for the same reasons.
Moreover, the food was cold but the waitress told us that we should have taken it from the bottom, at it is warmer there!
The waitress told us that we were the first ones to complain and that she had clients that came from Ontario and even Newfoundland.... sure!
In other words, I will not come back for a bad buffet and unfair treatment...
Read moreWalking in, I felt like it was 1970 with old carpets and the many retro decorations you'd expect to find in this kind of Chinese restaurant. Despite this, the place was rather clean and I do enjoy this type of atmosphere.
Service was quick and very friendly. Our server did check on us in a timely manner as well. I ordered red wine which was served in a clean glass, my fiance ordered green tea which was served in a cute cup and my four year old son ordered an apple juice which they poured in front of him.
We all had the buffet so I can't comment on the portions, but the price was more than fair. The buffet itself was rather small but the food was fresh and tasted great, and I don't care much for variety when the selection is ideal and the food is delicious.
So I had a pleasant experience, perhaps they could update a few decorations, the restrooms had these tiny urinals and toilets that were great for my son but not as great for me. I almost felt I was in a kid's restroom. But that doesn't count for much, all in all, this was a...
