I'm going to do a short but sweet review today. I was trying to think of something for dinner when the rest of the fam was having Domino's Pizza, not a fan... I first thought of Dilallo's for some buck burgers, which I like but find pricey as I can make 6 of the same burgers at home for that amount. Then I thought Blackstrap BBQ but a bit far and finding they've out priced me, I own my own smoker after all so no need... Bonyard came to mind as something nearby that I hadn't tried yet. As with all such decisions it's hard to commit, the prices are reasonable, but that's only part of the equation. So I went and ordered at the counter a French Mac, apparently it's their best seller. I chatted up I think it was one of the owners while waiting. I had actually given up writing Google Reviews for the most part, but I am making an exception here. I was really impressed. One problem I have is restaurants who charge premium prices but don't deliver a matching experience. Not that the prices are crazy at Bonyard, but this Mac n Cheese dressed up for a date could be considered pricey. That said, I didn't think it was overpriced, I enjoyed the meal and the portion was generous. One thing Mac n Cheese can be is tasteless or pastey, theirs is neither, good use of aged cheddar. With a little terrasse outside this could be a nice spot to do lunch or dinner, not too far off the canal path, usually plenty of parking since they're pretty much the loner in the area as far as restaurants go. The Jerk Chicken Flotie was fabulous - combination of smokey spicey grilled jerk spices with the pineapple salsa and chilli lime crema married beautifully with the perfectly braised cabbage and kale, and the coconut chips and red corn sauce added a nice touch of earthiness - Excellent balance of textures, flavours, freshness and umami. And the Flotie itself - a flatbread version of a Caribbean Roti - is the perfect vehicle to contain all this goodness. Light, toasty, and slightly chewy, it has just enough flexibility to roll and just enough sturdiness to not fall apart when you roll it up with the delicious fillings.
The Duck Confit bowl was a bit more delicate, but no less flavourful - Rice, lentils, mushrooms, duck confit, giardineria pickles and charred broccoli all dance with each other to create a rich and intensely tasty experience especially with the truffle porcini cream. It somehow tastes decadent but feels healthy and vibrant.
The avocado cheesecake was also wonderful. I'm a huge fan of excellent cheesecake and was pleased to discover that this was creamy with a nice crisp crust, without being too sweet or too heavy. The avocado adds richness and the coconut brings some textural contrast to the party. Great way to cap off a great meal.
