It has become a little tradition that I take my father here for father's day and his birthday, we game a bit, eat, have some wine and enjoy a nice outing. I have been to this restaurant 3 times now, it would have been 4 but they were closed the last time, I think they should have stayed closed.
The first time I was there was June 2022, everything was excellent, service and food. I returned some months later, and ate well again, but the waiter and service was not great, we were almost ignored, my father had dropped his fork, and a couple had to get his attention for me, and later I had to actually get up myself to ask him for water.
This last time, Monday January 8th, was the worst overall. It was my father's 86th birthday, reservations were for 6:45, we arrived about 10 minutes early and was accomodated easily as it was not that busy, the gentleman who sat us was kind and courteous, I was able to choose our table, ambiance was nice, dimmed lights, fairly quiet. Almost immediately the waiter(H.R?), which was the same as the last time I was there, was ready to take our order, I was only looking at the wine list. I ordered a bottle of wine, Bordeaux Superieur 55$, which was the best part of the meal. He brought the bottle promptly, and we had to ask for a few more minutes to order, definitely felt rushed.
We didn't get any entrees, but did order a 6$ focaccia bread since they don't give any bread anymore, it is not really focaccia bread, but it did taste pretty good, that was the 2nd best part of the meal. My father ordered the lamb chops and I ordered a steak and added tempura shrimp. The lamb chops were just okay, not as good as the older recipe, very little side dish and a whole lot of onions. I ordered my steak, med-well, it came very well done, the first two bites were okay but the rest was not, very tough and dry, I had to soak it in the "peppercorn" sauce that honestly wasn't good either, salt and pepper were my best friends in this meal. They say its aged in house. Where? The freezer? I did tell the waiter and he did ask if I wanted to send it back, I said no becuase I didn't want to wait longer and not eat with my father, I regret that though. The mash potatoes were very plain, bland and seemed like boxed mashed potatoes, small portion, as were the couple of stringed vegetables. The shrimp were okay, 3 giant shrimp, came with some type of mayo dip, but not even a lemon wedge.
The waiter came again to fill our wine once but that was it, he was not very sincere and seemed to only cater to "vip" clientelle who had his full attention, like last time. Maybe it was because we were casually dressed or spoke mostly english. When it was time to pay, he asked how things were, and I told him I didn't enjoy my meal, in which he replied that he asked me if I wanted to return the steak, and I said yes but it is also to him to bring it to the attention to his boss and that he could have compted the shrimp or bread at least, he cut me off in a rude manner saying he would rather I eat well but if I wanted him to then he will, and left before I could say anything, returning a minute later and saying there you go, I removed the shrimp, in a belittling manner. The bill was 188$, I tipped him 15% which I honestly only did because he took the 19$ shrimp off. As I felt, I wish I would have gave him nothing. He apologized for the steak, but I did not even acknowledge him.
It is a matter of principle and good service etiquette, he could have been more corteous about it or even told the staff, they could have offered a dessert or even a coffee beforehand. These meals may have not been the chefs specialty but I was really disappointed with my overall experience, I think I could have made it better myself at home. There are many great restaurants in Montreal and I will 100% not be returning to this one, I expect more from the casino. If you like ambiance and nicely presented, small portions of overpriced, mediocre food, then go to Le Montreal. Save your money and put it on 17 black, better chance you will leave the...
Read moreUgh. First time and certainly my last. We had a reservation on a Thursday evening for my dad's 70th birthday. It took a while for the waiter to come and take our orders because there was an issue with their tablets. Why can't they take the orders on paper when the tablets aren't working?
I wanted to order the Table d'hôte but asked to switch one of the main plates for the tartare, asking if they could charge me an extra. The waiter refused, stating he would have to charge me everything separately, which would cost me almost double. This is ridiculous since I ended up only ordering the tartare (42$ before tax), when I could've spent minimum 70 before tax.
We got a bottle of wine for 4 people and the waiter NEVER came back even once to ask us if we wanted something else to drink.
The appetizer my parents got was a single warm oyster on a huge bed of salt and pepper. Why serve something that is not edible?
When we received the main plate, the waiter NEVER came back to ask us if everything was to our liking.
It also took forever for the plates (appetizers and main plate) to be removed.
My sister ordered the only vegan plate on the menu, the tofu was undercooked (barely grilled) and unseasoned, the oat was mushy and watery.
Also took a while to get the check.
Overly expensive and overall not a...
Read moreAs a long time line cook and foodie I must say, the experience and food wasn't on the level of many of montreals top tier restaurants. Was sceptical to be fair because of the backlash they received from the culinary community for ignoring the cities amazing talent pool of chefs. Had the seasonal tasting menu, (priced around 200$ w/o wine pairing). While some of the dishes like the first course tartar were on point, some of the courses seemed lacklustre and like filler pieces for a menu that missed several bases. The fried halibut was greasy and underseasoned, with a flavourless puree that when I questioned the server as to what it was, I was told it was 'just chlorophyll' (essentially grass trimmings) the salad course with scallop and ginger, but then also a black truffle emulsion didn't seem to make any sense either. Coupled with the lack of Quebec chefs, ingredients and attention to seasonality, I felt kind of ripped off. I've eaten at 2-3 Michelin starred restaurants from New York to Paris, as well as most of montreals notable restaurants (many more than a handful of times) and Robuchons Montreal casino outpost just didn't stack up... save the 200$ and go to Joe Beef, PDC, Le Mousso etc. if you want a proper dining experience....
