-I started with ‘cote de porc braisé aux cinq épices’, which boasted faultlessly braised pork, tasting fresh and meaty. The minimum that one should expect, indeed, but many eateries are sadly just reheating their braised meats, a laughable mistake that Red Tiger did avoid during this visit. The Nuoc mam particularly inspired on this evening (great punch of acidity and spicyness, but perfectly balanced). And as with everything I ate here, the genuine Vietnamese flavours are genuinely replicated, with refinement, true, but they remain Genuine. This was delicious and well made as with everything I ate there. It is just the tiny portions (all the items I ordered came as tiny portions) that I take issue with, but most of the newly opened restaurants are feeding you with tiny portions, anyways. 7/10
-Pursued with ‘Boeuf et porc roulé dans des feuilles de bétel’ – the quality of the ingredients playing a role in the equation, perhaps, but cooking skills were also required and they shone through: the meat perfectly moist, packed with proper heat (not too hot to burn a palate, but enoughly warm to keep the meaty flavor alive),the taste delicious. Sauces are not an afterthought as the pairing sauce had an exciting depth of flavor, exquisitely sweet rather than cloying and uninspired. 7/10
Red Tiger is the ‘prescription’ to all the quibbles I kept finding with most Asian-style bistrots in town, lately : a grill that is too ‘shy’, food that is trying too much to please everyone, etc. Here, at Red Tiger, the grill ..grills! The food tastes delicious. They may look young and beautiful, which are sometimes attributes that one would not associate with serious cooking, but they made it happen: the cooking here is to be taken seriously. Imagine if they were allowed to grill on charcoal! Red Tiger is serious stuff (though, certainly not the cheapest Vietnamese-inspired eatery that I...
Read moreWas really underwhelmed by my experience. I went here a couple years back and was really disappointed with the food and service. The place was packed and we got crammed into a small corner table. I had to keep gesturing to the server to come over to us even just to get water that we waited over 20 minutes for. In terms of the food what I remember is that I didn't feel like the value was there for how much I spent. Fast forward to today and I decided to give it another shot since I kept hearing people saying how much they liked it so I figured maybe I was just not having the best day the last time I went and why not try again. We tried 5-6 plates and everything was either too poignant in taste or completely bland. I usually love authentic Vietnamese food but this was way off in my opinion, apart from what was drenched in sauce nothing had that Vietnamese flair I'm used to having. Lastly when it came to service you'd figure on a quiet Monday night there would be more care and attention but the servers barely came over and seemed really unenthused about being there. I get that service jobs can be tough as I worked in them before but it was such a chill night I don't get the lack of service. Apart from taking our order the only time the girl came was to tell us it was the last call for food. Wish I would like this place but I definitely say that will be my last time...
Read moreThe food tasted good. No doubt about it. The papaya salad was excellent. The portions are atrociously small (6 chicken wings for 12$ but those chicken must have been newborns). But even that isn't much of a problem; it's a tapas place, after all. I figured meals would be small.
No, the problem was that we "started" by ordering a few plates and only half the plates arrived, and the warm food seemed microwaved. Bad start, but ok. Then, we watched another table being seated, orders taken, and food brought, all the while we still waited for the rest of our order. Twenty minutes pass where we try to flag the staff while they drink cognac with the new seaters (we eventually figure out they're friends of the owners). Finally, I catch the eye of the staff, tell them about our ordeal and he goes to see what's up. Five minutes later, he tells us our plates will arrive in 2-3 minutes. Ten minutes later, they do. They're lukewarm, kinda tepid. We decide to leave after eating. But we can't get the bill, right? Still another 10 minutes before the staff shows up.
Ultimately, we ended up with subway pizza because the meal left us still hungry. Over an hour of waiting for four miniature lukewarm/microwaved dishes, all the while watching the next table receive impeccable and friendly service, due to their link to the owners. Paid 50$ for this. Needless to say, we're...
