Went with my daughter, her hubby and my grandkids to Smitty's for breakfast on my last day in Newfoundland. I was really looking forward to spending/sharing some last special time with my family. The waitress was pleasant and very attentive and our order arrived in a timely manner. Unfortunately that was the end of what should have been a yummy breakfast. My daughter ordered the regular two egg and bacon breakfast with hashbrowns with white toast. There was about two tablespoons of extra crispy shredded hashbrowns on the plate which were impossible to chew never mind requiring a magnifying glass to find them on the plate. Her eggs were rubbery. In other words inedible. My daughter returned her meal and the waitress was great about refunding the cost of that meal. I ordered the special which was a grilled cheese and back bacon sandwich that I made the mistake of ordering the shredded hashbrowns as well. A repeat of two bite crispy critters. DISGUSTING AND CHEAP MINISCULE AMOUNT FOR WHAT THE MEAL COST. My one grandson enjoyed his cinnamon swirl pancakes. The other one hated his grilled cheese and back bacon stating that the meat was hard to chew. Overall the meals were a real disappointment. Wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anybody. They could also use an interior overhaul. The decor was very old,...
Read moreThe food was alright and the servers were friendly enough, but the wait was really bad. We had been seated for about 45 minutes after we placed our order and people who came in after us were getting served and leaving before our dishes arrived.
I felt like the waitress who served us was really nervous or anxious about a mix-up with our ticket and it somehow had gotten lost in translation with the kitchen. Transparency is all I ask for when dining in a restaurant, and unfortunately we didn't receive it. The waitress did offer a nice discount which was appreciated as I know they were busy, so that helped a little.
The pancakes were tasty enough, but very very overfilling. My brother had the Ukrainian skillet and my father had a traditional style breakfast, they both seemed okay with their food.
One thing I didn't particularly like was the condition of the fish tank. I love they have they fish in such a big tank but I felt bad because it seemed very dirty and not overly stimulating or colorful for the fish that were in there. It would have been more enjoyable had the tank been maintenanced more frequently. It has been years since I last came to Smitty's, but this time around wasn't enjoyable enough to make me want to return...
Read moreWe have come to this location numerous times. On Sunday we visited again and unfortunately it will be the last. Service is always very slow whether the place is busy or only a few tables. Waitress is either busy with other tasks or they don’t care about the job. Took 2.5hrs to get our food which had been sitting under the warmer way too long. Eggs Benedict was over cooked and couldn’t cut the English muffin so hard. The beef dip was salty, fries were cold and gravy was sitting so long it had developed a skin on top of it. The beef should be advertised as processed meat and not roast beef. It was not very eatable. We more often than not get the same quality of service. The restaurant it self needs a major make over, from floor to ceiling. I have to wonder if the areas a customer can see that needs repairs or cleaning what does the kitchen look like. With that said all of us were sick that night and the next day. Disappointing in this place as I do know people can have off days and that is why we continued to give it the benefit, we will not be going back unless the establishment has a over haul. ...
