Smitty's Family Restaurant - Nanaimo Rock City — Restaurant in Nanaimo

Great family restaurant! Lots of family with babies and young children eating here. So I felt comfortable with my toddler without feeling like we're disturbing other customers. The food is very reasonably priced and service was excellent considering how busy the weekend brunch rush was. Outside of the morning weekend rush, it's quieter if you are looking for less of a crowd.

I had the one egg breakfast for $11 and the 'dutch/french' style crepe for $15 since I really want to try the crepe but also needed more substance. The hash browns have 2 options, cubes or shredded which is a nice touch. Same goes for the toast, they give you options. The crepe was really good but I just wish they would give you an option to add eggs and bacon/sausage at a discount rather than ala carte. The only negative I would say is the sausage wasn't good and could be better. Overall I will definitely return and try more...

Very disappointed the last two times we visited, in regards to service. Last time the server seemed irritated when I asked about an allergen and kept saying that they "couldn't guarantee anything" rather than look into it. The food was okay.

This time the service was even worse. Very long wait. Would not show me an allergen binder so I could sort out options after he came back and told me my first choice would not work. Then he brought out my meal without a large portion of it missing due to possible allergens but did so without letting me know ahead of time that would be the case, resulting in very little food on the plate. He did not return at any point to check on how the meals were and still charged full price for mine despite most of the meal being missing.

The other people at the table said their food was "fine", hence the second star on the rating.

Food was good but the service was SLOW! Felt like we were being ignored, it took at least 40 minutes to get her food, another 20 minutes to get our check.

We only had anybody come ask us if we needed a coffee top up once, at one point it even took almost 20 minutes to get a glass of water. No check in to see if the food was fine or if we needed anything.

The only reason we got the check was cuz we had to do call the waitress, which she ignored, and actually took another couple at a different table to get her attention for us.

Also the bench seating is so old that it's starting to come apart and looks absolutely terrible.

There's a couple items on the menu that I would like to try, however I can't say if I'm going to go back or not to try them because of my experience. Maybe I'll wait and go to the South...
