ChungChun Rice Dog is a fast food joint that serves Korean-style hot dogs. Every dog is coated in a thick crust and is deep-fried in a batter of glutinous rice. A couple years ago, a friend and I got lunch here. We had a fantastic experience. Today, I returned to do an official review.
ChungChun gets you to build your hot dog. First, you choose your filling (beef, chicken, veggie, chocolate and so on). You then choose a topping like potatoes, sweet potatoes, ramen chips, or corn flakes. Then the dippings like gravy. Lastly, you will pick your seasonings and sauces. Remember that you don’t have to take any of these add-ons. Even with this meal, I didn’t take any toppings or seasonings.
I ordered three items, such as their Beef + Chicken Cheddar Cheese; their Beef + Chicken Double Cheese; and their House Coffee (ice coffee). I dipped the dogs in a sweet chili sauce, and they were FULL of cheese. This was a cheeseaholic’s dream.
As I almost walked out the door, I changed my mind. I had to have their chocolate dog. It came and looked just like the others. This is just a guess, but I believe they used an actual chocolate bar. It was pretty close to a deep-fried Mars bar at a fair.
For a little fast food joint, they have value. Their inventive batter makes them a point of interest for many people, and they back it up in taste...
Read moreYou're not allowed to phone in and order a pickup order. They force you to use one of their facilitated apps like Uber or skip the dishes or something which is insanely odd. You should be able to for most short order restaurants. You should be able to phone in and place a pickup order. I'm exactly across the street from them and yet they're not allowed to make a phone pickup order. So I now have to spend 5 minutes in the store instead of spending 5 minutes comfortably in my car while they make it. That's a big big turn off, especially in the food service industry. Cuz if I wanted to wait around for my food I could just go to the Wendy's next door or the subway next door or what not. So that's that. Also, there's like next to no seating so eating in on a cute little date is probably not ideal, especially with the amount of traffic that comes in through the front door and the atmosphere. Just you know isn't really there if if you just want corn dogs and you just you know you don't care how you're treated or you don't care. If you can't order ahead of time via a simple phone call, then this is definitely the place for you. But if not, you could probably find Asian authentic cuisine for comparable prices somewhere else in the city that will probably cater to your needs. Or even at the very least let you facilitate a phone...
Read moreNever mind the originality of a Korean rice hot dog and in essence something different to try on a Friday night (think pogo stick on steroids) but came here to say how incredibly fantastic the online ordering experience was for me. I wish more restaurants would adapt the Ritual ordering system through Google Maps. The simplicity and ease was very much appreciated. Each hotdog on the menu had a beautiful photo with precise description so you knew exactly what you were ordering and placing in your order basket with exact total amount. Once the order was placed you recieved an ETA email and sms letting you know when to come pickup your food - Google Map directions included. Well done folks! P.S. Thank you for having the option to have all your delicious sauces to go, easy to read receipt, and a legend that tells you what hotdog is what based on the colour of the wooden stick. Devil is in the...
