I am an enthusiastic lover of Indian food, and was extremely excited to place an order for delivery to my home last night. The arrival of the food was prompt, which I appreciated - within 30 minutes.
Upon opening what I had ordered, which came to $45.00, my excitement soon turned to disappointment. The three takeout containers which I had ordered were about 1/3 full, and barely had any food in them! The chicken dish I ordered had maybe four or five little chunks of chicken in it!
The portion sizes were utterly horrendous, considering that on their own each dish costs around $13. Really? $13, for barely a sample of food? So after dropping $45 on my dinner, I was still very hungry afterwards. According to other reviews of this restaurant, the portion sizes are no mistake and confirmed by the restaurant itself as their normal sizing.
I am disheartened that any food related business would practice this way. You would assume they get into the business because they are passionate about food, and would like to spread their passion to others...not rip them off and give them a bad experience.
But hey, I've figured out why the delivery time was about 30 minutes. Doesn't take that long to put a few spoonfuls in a container.
Won't be returning my business to you ever again, and definitely would never recommend. The only recommendation I would make about Jewel of India is to skip it entirely....
Read moreWhat happened to my favourite restaurant? I’m in shock. This is where I went on a date with my wife when we first started dating over 20 years ago and we have been coming here ever since. We have been loyal customers for over 20+ years!
The restaurant announced it’s closing in April to renovate and then when it opens..completely different menu, chef etc. I can understand the place needed a touch up (it looks bright and wonderful after the renovations) however I don’t even recognize the menu anymore. All our favourites and what we normally order are gone! I understood that the original owner retired and the restaurant has been handed over to new owners however it’s not the Jewel Of India we once knew.
My respectful request to the new owners, Jewel Of India has been an institution in London for 39 years. Many have celebrated important milestones here (including myself). Please don’t forget about us regular customers that have been coming here for 20+ years. Please consider bringing back the old menu (or have two menus, one for the regulars and one for the new customers). The original owner has built a legacy that you need to continue, he has built a relationship with the community like non other and we need you to continue this hospitality. Please take this as a humble consideration and not criticism. Thank you.
Sincerely, Loyal customer of Jewel of India...
Read moreAuthentic Indian and Pakistani dishes. Main courses were served fresh and made to order but appetizers were clearly made prior (maybe left over from lunch buffet?). We came when they opened for dinner service at five on a Monday so this may be why - not a good excuse but seems to reason they don't make to order since it's a quiet service night. Appetizers tasted well made and flavourful, just obviously microwaved. Beer was almost room temperature - didn't finish it. Plain rice was a little bit on the greasy side - we prefer a steamed rice, so maybe just our own preference. But honestly the main courses were so good we soon forgot about how meh the starters were and the room temp beer. Had the Karai Chicken (never had before) and Tarka Dall (we always order at Indian restaurants). Karai was listed as medium spice and was definitely slightly hotter than that - which we were very happy about and dish was a nice generous portion of white meat only. Lentils were a perfect mix of spice and texture. Leftovers were delish! Looking forward to returning and trying their vindaloo as well as some of the other dishes we haven't tried before. Would definitely recommend but would skip starters unless it's a weekend or a busier day and would ensure ask for them made to...
