I got talking with a Filipino friend the other day. Our conversation turned to food, so she told me about a Filipino restaurant. Itās called London-Asian Foods and is located on Highbury Ave and Huron St. I had time today so I went.
Once I walked in, I saw products on shelves just like a grocery store. I was confused because itās listed as a restaurant on Google Maps. But I went to the back and found a cafeteria. Here, they scoop dishes into containers in one of three sizes. Conveniently, they have a wall-mounted table with about 6 chairs for customers to eat inside.
Her favourite Filipino dish is called sisig, and so I made a mental note to keep an eye out for it. Turns out they had it! I took a large. Itās a minced pork dish with chopped onion and chicken liver, somewhat similar to beef stroganoff in taste and colour. Sometimes it has mayonnaise (probably why mine was creamy and beige).
While examining the several dishes, I spotted a purple dessert. It was cut into a dozen slices like a pizza/pie. My server explained that itās a purple yam-flavored sticky rice cake. On the top, I found brown crumbs. These are toasted coconut flakes which add a crunchy texture. After finishing the sisig, I took a mouthful of the sticky rice cake. It was like a rice pudding but want wet.
London-Asian Foods functions as both a grocery store and a restaurant. They sell all things Filipino, such as instant noodles, crackers, sweets, condiments, and so on. Their cafeteria serves customers with about a dozen popular Filipino dishes. Whatās...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI bought a crackling last October 30 and found out when i get home it was expired. I messaged them right away thru facebook messenger that the item was expired. They asked me to drop by and return the item. When I came back last Thursday, November 7, they asked me to honor an exchange however, when I picked up a new one it was expired as well. the entire rack of cracklings was expired. What was irritating was that they didnāt check the items with the supplier that the items were all expired and no need to check as per their feedback to me since the supplier is a trusted one. This was unacceptable why they did not act on my complain to check the displayed item instead of relying on their supplier. In addition to my disappointment, they have no consideration of my time to come back or offering me something as consolation of my time to offer me a gift. Their response was nothing. In my experience of going to a regular store or grocery, no question asked with the same concern ā they offer me immediately with no hesitation. Thatās unacceptable and embarrassing of a store that donāt have proper customer service. Not happy with...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis location used to have a Chinese noodle shop, but it is now a Filipino grocery store (dry, frozen and baked goods) with a deli counter. The kitchen is still in the back and there is still a small dining area off to the side. We were surprised by the change and it is slightly more cramped inside than the way the previous restaurant was set up. We ordered the chicken adobo, the pork blood stew and some fried fish for take out. The stews looked a bit dry in the chafer pans, but we like Filipino food and there hasn't been a lot of it in London. I really wanted some of the lechon but there wasn't much left. At any rate, my expectations were low.
The food was great! The adobo was really good, moist and flavourful, and the pork blood stew surprisingly good (not one of my go-tos, but I wasn't ordering). First rate comfort food. A note of caution: what had looked like a braised green bean in my stew turned out to be a scorching hot chili pepper. I was hiccuping and washing my mouth out in the sink with tap water and milk...
