Wrong time, Wrong Place
It was noon, earlier than normal, and McCabeâs was just a few steps away. The menu in the doorway seemed satisfyingly extensive ⌠and it was Irish, reminding me of my Dublin visit last year. I found myself focussed on the menu that was headed âPoutine and Spudsâ. That should have been a warning, but I ordered the âIrish Loaded Spudsâ with the optional pulled chicken ⌠and waited. The pub was not busy, thus the mealâs arrival was extraordinarily slow, and what a âshowpieceâ it was (For want of a better description). An extremely hot iron skillet under a 12-inch wooden plate tried to contain an astonishing amount of assorted food filling the total area of the plate and, at least, 6-inches high. Presentation was totally absent (It seemed that all ingredients had been prepared in a large bowl with a wooden spoon). The problem being that as soon as a fork touched the mountain of food, there was a mini-avalanche that spread out over the table. Mentioning this to the server was met with a laughing, âThatâs Ok, I have to clean tables.â I may have eaten about one third of the dish and, then, sent it away to the cookâs âtrashâ. Remember; It was intended to be a small (I thought) plate of poutine. Walking away, I kept wondering what made me go there in the...
Read moreThis place started off great. Good atmosphere, great live music, not too crowded. As the night progressed the attitude of the bar tenders changed. I know what you're going to say "well that's because you had lots of drinks and your perception changed" that's not true because I had good service but a few people in the party I was with started noting that the bar tenders were ignoring them. As I observed I saw that the bartendes were laughing and joking about it. This was so rude and off-putting. For a bar that is trying to compete with other establishments in a college/university city, you aren't doing so well at trying to keep customers coming back. The people I was with were younger and I guess that might be why we experienced difference service. I have worked in the food service industry for many years and that kind of service will lead to a toxic relationship between business and patrons. Change your attitudes towards the people you are serving. It should be treated as a privilege to have customers use your business, not the...
Read moreI was a regular here until this past Saturday night, I was asked by the bouncer to give up my seat at the bar to give more room/flow for patrons to get drinks. The pub was not overly busy and I didn't quite understand why we had to give up our chairs. in any case the party I was with, one person had to eat their ordered food standing up. although they profess to be a pub, which to me is a sit down place, be aware that on busy nights and weekends, they clear the chairs at the bar and want it more a club atmosphere. it's unfortunate that they would treat regular customers like that; we did spend lots of $ there but hey, fortunate for me, I have a choice where I spend my hard earned money and there are many many choices of pubs in london where they're not going to take your chair away on a busy night. perhaps it was just an off night, I'm not sure, but I hope they realize it wasn't appreciate. note: after expressing our displeasure to the manager on duty, our chairs...
