I was surprised at how amazing the food is here, I hadn't heard of it before. This restaurant certainly deserves top marks. I'm a big fan of Sashimi, and the Sashimi I ordered at Genji is definitely the best I have had in Ottawa. I ordered the 16 piece Sashimi platter. It looked small in the picture, but the pieces were large and generously cut when my order arrived. The meat was fresh, very soft and full of flavor. This Sashimi is worlds different from what you get at a grocery store or a mall sushi place, this is what Sashimi should be like.
Likewise, my wife also really enjoyed her order. She got the Rainbow Sushi plate (M8) and was also impressed by the quality and taste. There is so much variety on the menu that it is hard to choose what might be best for lunch, but that makes it fun to visit because of the number of options.
One thing to note is that it can be quite busy around lunch time. You can expect to wait 30+ minutes to get your food.
The restaurant has a comfortable atmosphere that I enjoyed. I Also liked the collection of plants at the front window.
Overall a fun experience with surprisingly good food. I will definitely be returning to Genji...
Read moreAte here March 1st 2021 (Monday). Not busy, service was nice. We ordered something and asked for change, they honored our request which is super nice. Service 5 star.
Price/Value: 2 Star. Over priced. Understanding that it is covid, but so is everyone's income.
I love good sushi and ate all around town. But the sushi made here is lacking some skill, understanding to save cost during COVID, the fish is cold because it cannot be stored under room temperature or it will go bad, but the rice is very cold as well, and also not very flavorful. Our bill comes to ~$77 after tips and taxes (2 persons). I can get better sushi at other places with more items and better quality (example Tomo, Merivale Seafood Grill, or J:Unique 3 on top of my head right now).
This is not a complaint, just a comment for the store and for others who...
Read moreWe always try to find a Japanese restaurant worth going to during our travels. Ottawa had several options to offer and we chose Genji with its wide variety of traditional as well as unusual offerings.
Being open to trying dishes that are outside of the typical roll-nigiri-sashimi playlist (Genji offers all of that too), we decided to experiment. Uni was fantastic, fresh and delicious. Tuna tartare "pizza" made on a thick fried rice crust/patty was unusual yet yummy. An eggplant appetizer was truly decadent. Loved the maple syrup egg sashimi. A shiitake roll was sweet and almost dessert like. Mango icecream and green tea creme brulee had extremely clean and vibrant flavors. 🍣🐠🐟🍁🥞🍕🍆🍧👏🤗😋
All that magic reasonably priced and prepared and presented with love and care by a wonderful chef and staff....
