Well, we accepted the owner's offer to try again; and YES, the pizza was BETTER, but I'm still not impressed
However, I think this now comes down to a matter of personal tastes and preferences
Clearly, the owner and kitchen staff knew that our pizza was being prepared to "correct" our dislike of the previous pizza we received; so one has to assume that they would take extra care to make it their best. Nevertheless, it still did not excite me or tickle my taste buds
My issues with the pizza were:
the original pizza had a very discoloured area, concentrated in one place. This time, it was still discoloured (in my opinion), BUT, it was now more evenly distributed across the entire pizza (see photo) giving the entire pizza an odd orange colour. My wife later identified the likely cause of this to be Cheddar cheese (which, as it happens, I'm not a fan of - thus at least part of my lack of enthusiasm for this pizza) the original pizza had a very offensive smell. This time, though the same smell was vaguely there, it was possibly only noticeable because I was searching for it. Our theory: the odour is from the Cheddar cheese (again, if correct, likely why I'm not a fan), which now was more evenly distributed, thereby presumably reducing the effect of the cheese (if that is indeed what was causing the smell) on the odour we failed to notice this on the first pizza; BUT the pizza (except for the dough & sauce) is effectively upside-down. Instead of the conventional dough, sauce, cheese and toppings; Juluca's pizza is built up dough, sauce, toppings and then cheese. So, their "toppings" are not toppings
As I said, I'm still not a fan; but, at least, this time, the pizza was okay (by my tastes) - just not great. I'm sure there are those out there who will love the way Juluca makes their pizzas; but I'm not one of them
(Previous review from 2020-08)
My wife and I have been trying out pizzas from a range of different pizza restaurants in Barrhaven. The other week we ordered a Canadian pizza from Juluca's
We had high expectations as our youngest son recommended their pizza as one of the best in Barrhaven. Sadly, what we discovered did NOT live up to the promise
When we brought the pizza home, we were met with a foul smell. Plus the cheese had a very odd deep orange colour to it; so we took a couple bites in trepidation. Well, I was ready to throw it out, but my wife felt it wasn't that bad. She admitted that it was at the bottom of the list of all the pizzas that we've tried, but that it wasn't so bad that it had to be thrown out
Knowing that pizza often tastes better the next day, we both tried a piece the following day. I felt it was somewhat better, but still not worth keeping whereas my wife agreed that it was better the second day. However, we both still agreed that it was the worst pizza we've ever had
So, since our son apparently enjoys their pizzas so much, we called him and told him that he could have the rest - no charge. Once he stopped by to pick it up, saw it and smelled it, he threw it out in the green bin
However, he did tell us that this pizza was not representative of Juluca's normal food
Nevertheless, given all the other places to get pizza, I don't think...
Read moreI was excited to hear that a new cafė opened up and was very much so willing to give it a shot as I like to support local businesses and I am a local guide. I want to be as honest as possible, this cafè is not great and the service was very lackluster. There's definetly much better smallscale cafės/restaurants with much larger menus out there.
The coffee, which is the backbone of any selfrespecting cafe, was served black despite me asking to have cream and sugar added, even after adding my choice of cream and sugar, it still tasted bland and forgettable. What was not forgetable was the truly awful service. The young lady working the cash treated me with attiude, repeatedly ignored my questions and got my order wrong. The latter of which is forgivable as this is a human process and mistakes will be made. However, that does not excuse the attitude.
If the owners are reading this please hear me out, you need to understand that when someone works cash, they are not only the representative of the business but they are also its public face to the customers. If said employee is rude, ignores customers, and treates them like they are irrelevent then it makes whole the establishment look bad. Maybe that employee was having a bad day but that does not excuse the poor customer service, as its customers like myself that help keep your business running.
I wanted to like this cafè, I really did. Hey ho for what its worth the fries were okay. My advice is that if want to keep your customers returning, please don't treat them like they are subhuman. Pragmatically speaking, you are a local business and you need returning customers like myself in order to sustain yourselves. All that being said, I would not recommend this establishment to the readers of this review nor will I be returning; especially when Tim Horton's and Starbucks are not only near by, but they also treat their customers with the most basic...
Read moreMy recent first visit to Juluca’s with a group of friends offered a range of experiences, from surprising to disappointing. Upon arrival, I was eager for a coffee, especially that the restaurant was freezing cold. I was informed they don't serve coffee. Instead, the server suggested an Americano, which is essentially espresso. Not at the dinner hour. I had advised the server that I do not eat meat. Despite this, when she mentioned the specials, one of them was eggplant Parmesan. She advised that it was vegetarian but not vegan. I ordered it. To my surprise, the dish arrived with what I thought wa a plant-based meat sauce. While it was new to me to have meat with eggplant Parmesan, I decided to go with it. The eggplant was accompanied by a mound of fettucine noodles, which were unfortunately stuck together in a clump. The presentation was far from ideal and left much to be desired. When it came to cheese, I requested some Parmesan. The server kindly brought a small plastic cup with a bit of cheese, which I appreciated. However, when the rest of my table also asked for Parmesan, she returned with three additional small plastic containers. The presentation and consistency in serving were less than impressive. Finally, when we requested tea at the end of our meal, we were met with another disappointment. Only one English breakfast tea bag was available in the entire restaurant, forcing one of us to choose a different drink. In addition, they close at 9:00 and told us at 8:15 that they wanted to close early. How do you do this with restaurant patrons in the restaurant. In summary, the lack of coffee options, the unexpected addition of meat to a supposed vegetarian dish, the poorly presented pasta, and the tea bag shortage all contributed to a rather lackluster dining experience. Not a place I'd...
