We bought frozen cabbage rolls, borscht, and perogies. Since a member of our family is pescatarian, we got the vegetarian rolls and the sauerkraut and the potato-and-sour-cream perogies; it's great that Ottawa Perogies offers vegetarian and vegan options.
The cabbage rolls did not have too much sauce and were very good. The perogies were also excellent, miles ahead of mass-produced perogies that can be bought at the supermarket. Two packages were enough for a meal for four and ample leftovers. (I think the cook-time suggested on the packaging is a little long, but to each their own.) The borscht was the only real disappointment. We are used to Russian-style borscht, which tends to be thicker; this borscht was a little thin for our tastes, and had too few beets, though it still had a rich taste.
One of the principal concerns of potential customers is probably the cost. Given that everything is handmade and of exceptional quality, the price is more than justifiable—these people have to be able to make a living. To be clear, if you're looking for a cheap meal, this isn't it—but if you have the money to spend on good tasty traditional eastern European food, this is the...
Read moreI bought the pork pelmeni (pierogis) and they were just okay. It’s 11.99 for 1 pound of pierogis which in my opinion is too expensive. I think for that price they should have been better quality, of course nothing is better than home made but these didn’t taste home made or even close to the other pierogis I’ve purchased in different European delis.
edit: as the owner has responded to my review and said that they do not sell pierogis at 11.99 per pound, I will attach screen shots of their website. 1 pound of pierogis on your website is $10.50, and you sell pork and chicken pierogis. As im sure you know, meat pierogis are called pelmeni. I also did not say you are a deli in my review, I said that you can buy much better pierogis in different european delis. Thank you for bringing up Lakomka, I love that place and encourage everyone to go there instead. I have edited my review as you asked for clarification. Do not lie to people on google reviews and say your price per pound is not 11.99 in store I was just there 2 weeks ago, and do not try and call out customers for being liars, this is...
Read moreHands down, these are Ottawa's worst perogies. I normally love all perogies, even the frozen grocery store ones. We picked up a pack of raw frozen perogies, expecting them to be really high quality. The instructions said to boil the perogies to cook them, so we did that and got a really mushy dough. We later decided to fry these and they just fall apart. Again the dough tastes raw and mushy, and gives me a stomach ache every time. All other perogies I have had have a nicely cooked, slightly browned outside and a nice filling inside. In addition to rubbery dough that never cooks properly, the inside was just ok - we got potato, cheese, and bacon, but the filling is really just potato with a bit of spice. I didn't taste cheese or bacon. You can get way better perogies at Walmart or any grocery store at a much...
