We ordered Phở Chín Nạm Sách (Well-done beef phở with flank and tripes), Beef Thai noodle soup with shrimp and pot-sticker from the dim sum section.
The phở broth was not good. It was not rich in beef flavor at all and indeed was sweeter than a true phở broth should be. The only good thing about the phở was that the slices of beef meat were actually very decent. They were cut right and juicy. But the broth was a big disappointment.
The beef Thai noodle soup had a very strange taste: as if it was from a can/bouillon and was diluted into a bowl. I could not really tell what the flavor of this broth was; but it was not a meat flavor for sure. It was also not cooked right. This means: the rice noodle was broken inside the bowl (bad noodle cooking technique), the mushroom was not cooked at all (they looked like they were added into the bowl at the end instead of being cooked with the broth).
The Dim Sum pot-sticker was actually the best part of the meal. It tasted fresh and as if it was made in-house.
Overall, I won't come back given what I think phở should taste like and know where in the city I can find good one. Indeed, just down the street (Lebreton) are Phở 99 and Phở Bò Gà 1 which are way better than this place, at least in terms of...
Read moreDefinitely captivated a return customer! A scarce number of Pho restaurants I would truly admit was AMAZINGGGG!
Two sizes for pho noodles and even the large size left you insatiable for more as you dread finding that last chunk of veggie, fried tofu or strand of rice noodle. (Felt like the moment on Just For Laugh when that green cartoon character cries out “Mommy, it’s ooOver”). You could feel the love that went in the preparation - the carrot, broccoli and mini portobello that were pre boiled for tenderness and infused flavour, the tofu that was thinly sliced and deep fried, and the right type of rice noodles used. If you wanted to enrich your broth a notch, ask for tom yum flavour in the broth vs just basic veggie broth. And the fresh rolls - yum, Yum, YUM! So tightly wrapped that nothing falls out when you bite into it.
I would add that the place was meticulous and the washroom was spotless. The tables were Tetris-ly arranged to accommodate 2, 3 and 4+ patrons. Love the elongated spoon that really helped load up the noodles and broth efficiently. Admittedly prices were high-ER ($18 for large pho) but make it your guilty pleasure treat as it...
Read moreKevin Dang, sister of star waiter and chef of an amazing person and son of a gorgeous establishment. You might even forget why you're there when you spot the towering shining giant that is her brother. It's a warm feeling you get, when you walk in. Kevin, kevin, gina, together side by side with their brother (they are his three sisters). Though I will not be visiting again, I can say my life has been changed forever. (Dont be confused with the kanata noodle house, or kanata house 2 which is in Carling (not kanata), or kanata noodle house buffet). I recommend going to this high-quality, medium-cost noodle house. Again, make sure you check out the nice young man at the front desk (he is Kevin's brother). He is the founding son of the institution that is his restaurant. Back in 1877, he sailed across the ocean blue to land in British Colombia (from the island of Sankara). Then he walked a WHOLE 987 kilometers just to eat at his favourite restaurant, the noodle house. Taking inspiration, he took a bus ride a few years later to Ottawa. His ideal location for a noodle house. Now, 142 years later, he is serving you delicious noodles, right...
