Flavour is amazing! They can improve, though!

We tried the carne asada torta (the quality of bread is spectacular) and the asada fries with no special topping (ordered, and where charged, the cauliflower topping, but they forgot it). The fries are to die for! One torta and one fries were enough for 2 people in my case.

Things they can improve on: -the waiting line is super long (1h15 min wait on Saturday starting at 2:50 pm... They open at 3 pm) but it is because they are not very well organized. By having a menu board on the waiting line they will reduce the number of people arriving to the window to start thinking on what they want. By having someone on the line taking orders in batches (5 people at a time for example), they could cook in batches as well (they start preparing your oder once you arrive!). With a line so long, cooking in batches will not render unsold food at the end, even without a 3rd person helping on the line. -the start tip on the paying machine is 18%. Almost no one wants to leave so much of a tip for take-out, so people spend time either modifying the % or they don't leave any. Fix it to start on 10% and include other options for 15% and 20%. You will get more at the end of the day. -recycle! All perfectly recyclable items were being tossed with non-recyclables and food in the same bin! No no no! Put 3 containers: glass and cans, clean paper bags (where you deliver the torta), and everything else. Please. It is so simple. -the person taking orders also takes payments, delivers the food and drinks... and helps prepare the food. Therefore, that person should NOT be using latex gloves as that gives the false sense that all is clean and that cross-contamination is null. Not at all! With the same dirty gloves with meat (I think cooked... At least), this guy touches the paying machine, the sodas, the cash... everything. Tip: do not use gloves, just start the day with clean hands and do not touch food with your hands (because you have touched the machine, the money, the sodas...), rather use kitchen tongs!

These guys are super busy and that is why they have no time, energy and opportunity to re-think to improve their already successful and delicious businesses. I hope these tips are useful. Thanks for the...

TLDR: I don't recommend this restaurant. The food is just okay and very pricey.

As a Mexican living in Ottawa, I was really excited about this place, but now, I have mixed feelings. I had tried to eat at this restaurant 3 times in the last couple of months, but for one reason or another, I couldn't. Mostly because information about the restaurant is only shared on Instagram and I don't have a instagram account. I repeatitively missed updates about the restaurant and by the time I had arrived, it was closed or something had happened.

My wife and I were finally able to eat at this restaurant. We decided to order over the phone and pick it up. To our surprise, they don't have a phone. You can only order over the counter or using an food delivery app. I didn't like this AT ALL. We arrived and we had to wait for our food more than 20 min. We wanted to try "tortas", but they were ran out of "Tortas" on a Saturday evening. This is their MAIN DISH and they don't have "Tortas"??? It made no sense. Ok, we ordered "Asada fries" with toppings. To my surprise, "Asada fries" DO NOT include "carne asada". If they don't include it, why are they called "Asada Fries". Only the owner and God know why. The cheery on top for my visit was that you cannot order "Asada fries" + "carne asada" or "pastor". This makes ABSOLUTELY ZERO SENSE TO ME.

Once I passed this "problem", we ordered 1 "Asada fries" + "Chorizo" and 1 with "Barbacoa de Res". The toppings were rich and tasty (as they should be), but the fries and the toppings were lacking cohesion. I felt I was eating fries with toppings on the side. For these two assess fries, I paid between 35-40 dollars. After eating my fries, I felt it was not worth it. So please, go somewhere else and buy yourself better food.

I should say that if you are not Mexican (or Latino or from a country with tasty cuisine) or if you haven't tried out Mexican food, you will for sure find this food tasty and rich. However, I don't find this restaurant and its food memorable. There are other mexican restaurant with better mexican cuisine in the city. I don't recommend this...

I don't normally leave negative reviews but this one is well deserved.

Went to a party celebration, which was established well ahead of time.

The guy working as the waiter at the time barely knew what food had meat and alcohol on it, I am vegetarian and my sister can't have alcohol.

The knowledge on this was pretty crucial for both of us. We asked for water at first and were handed the tiniest plastic cups, often those given to children for water. Then we decided to try and order a "vegetarian" dish... Waiter handed us food without a fork or napkins... and expected us to eat it with our hands?? He never came to address the issue, despite the group being about 15 people.

Also, the establishment didn't mention to any of the people at attendance that a party of 8 or more was automatically given a 20% gratuity... So many of my friends and I paid tips on top of this charge (since it was hidden in fees) and only realized when we got an itemized receipt afterward. The waiter claims he told one person and expected the news to trickle, well clearly not and that information should be shared amongst the party members, since 20% is a lot to ask for without the option of saying "no".

Definitely ask for the breakdown of your receipt before hand. My bill was 62$ after tax and after the stupid charges that were added to our bill it was 95$.

When I asked the guy working why this was the case he just said they charge the group 20% automatically but didn't inform anyone in the group. As you can imagine, a lot of people were pretty unhappy. I'd expect this in the US, not Ottawa. If I could give 0 or even below 0 stars I would.

Food was subpar and lacked any distinguishing features, would not recommend, nor would I go back.

I will not recommend this place to any family or friends in the future and will instead tell them to avoid...

Fun lill cozy spot around Chinatown, worth the trip

EDIT: recently went to grab a small dinner at Torta Boyz's new(ish) brick and mortar and was very happy to see that the quality and flavours are still excellent. Their menu has expanded to include some appetizers, tacos and cocktails. The prices have gone up but worth the money since it's probably the best mexican food in Ottawa. The fish tacos we got were made fresh and dressed with plenty of fresh, sour, creamy pairings. Corn tortilla they use could have a bit more corn flavour imo. The Asada Fries are as good as ever. A mountain of guac and dressings and super crispy fries. Service is lovely. **** Absolutely amazing food here. They're located in a parking lot on Preston with a beautiful mural backdrop so you won't miss it. We got the carne asada torta and regular asada fries. You have the option of adding chicken, cauliflower or barbacoa to the fries. The food is divine and super fresh. There's so many components in each dish but nothing was overpowering and created a seamless flavour bomb. 🥪Carne Asada Torta - good lord this was good. The bread is light and crispy, with diced AAA striploin, a pickly acidic avocado curtido and well-balanced flavours from the chimi-churri. Plus they give you a little bag of what I think is escabeche, pickled peppers and carrots, which I definitely recommend adding to the torta. 🍟 Asada Fries - super crispy seasoned fries that withstand the layers of queso, guac and crema. Again, well-balanced flavours and super fresh from the pickled onions, cilantro and crema. PS. If you've had Campechano in Toronto, one of the Torta Boyz was the manager there and he's brought the same great flavours and quality to Ottawa. Also note that they get busy and may sell out early.
