The Royal Oak - Beechwood — Restaurant in Ottawa

Great potential but poor service and value.

Our server took 15 minutes to come by for our first drink order. When I asked if they stocked a particular beverage, the server replied condescendingly that I "must never have worked in a bar before" and of course they didn't carry root beer, "no pub carries root beer". I opened the menu to take a peak at some of the other options and the server tried to leave, even though my companion was ready and I just wanted to confirm the name of my second choice cocktail. He then tried to leave again even though we were mid sentence to order food.

He kept coming back to the table, interrupting the conversation at the weirdest times (like when our drinks were full) to constantly offer us water. For my second drink I ordered a rum and coke and he made a big deal about whether I liked lemon or lime and how he'd bring me my perfect drink. I'd specified a tall, and a short came to the table, with a side of lemon and lime since he'd forgotten which I preferred. There were two or three other similar situations over the course of 2 hours.

Natchos were flat, greasy, and served with hardly any salsa/sour cream.

Went here for drinks before we went to an event. We wanted to sit outside but when we waited outside the server came up to us and was like "I'm by myself so if you don't want to wait then go inside" she looked so upset and ran off her feet. Of course we felt bad so we went inside. Inside was pretty empty. We sat ourselves which it states to do. It took about 10 minutes before the bartender took our order. He did make them quickly though. It was silent inside. Even though it was supposed to be live music. I guess the man singing was on a break but they didn't even put on music while he was gone. It was very weird. We had a friend come join us and he ended up having to go to the bar to order his drink as the bartender never came back. They had a bus boy cleaning behind the bar but the poor girl outside definitely needed help. And they had at least 4 dirty tables inside he never touched. We ended up not getting a second round of drinks and just left. The drink was good but they definitely were...

On Saturday August 30 th 2024 we had a private birthday party on the top floor at the Royal Oak on Beechwood but for some reason last call was at 11:40 pm? So when the bar closed upstairs the remaining last 10 people went downstairs to the main bar and ordered drinks. We were well manered, polite and definitely not arrogant however not too long afterwards the barmaid started to cut people off, she started by saying I'm not serving you that's for sure you look wasted (the person she was referring to doesn't drink alcohol??) The party upstairs service was fantastic and they got well tipped at least 2000$, either she (the downstairs barmaid) found out about the tipping and got pissed off she wasn't chosen to work upstairs that night Who knows why she treated us so poorly? In my opinion when you spend collectively 10 grand in a bar you definitely don't deserve a cooler barmaid like that, what it tells me is that Royal Oak did not...
