I rarely give negative reviews, but my experience at Matsu Sushi Japanese and Korean Restaurant in Peterborough was exceptionally disappointing. The spicy salmon maki sushi had no salmon at all, and the spicy tuna maki sushi was the same with no trace of tuna. It was merely ordinary maki with a bit of sauce on top, which the owner claimed to be salmon and tuna sauce. When I asked the owner why there was no actual salmon or tuna, he mockingly asked if I was from Toronto and said that sushi in Peterborough is different from Toronto's and that they don’t include actual salmon or tuna in their rolls. This is absurd! I feel sorry for the customers in Peterborough. The prices at this restaurant are not cheap $40-50 per person (with a bottle of Canadian beer priced at $8.95, previously $6.95 as printed on the menu but now hand-corrected by the owner). Despite these not low prices, the food quality was poor. I was drawn in by the restaurant's high ratings to celebrate my son's competition win, but we were let down not only by the food but also by the environment. The adjacent room was filled with loud, disruptive guests, completely ruining the serene and elegant atmosphere one expects from a Japanese restaurant. Additionally, the quality of the tableware was subpar, with disposable chopsticks and mismatched utensils, making the rating and prices even more unjustifiable. This restaurant does not deserve its 4.3 rating and certainly not the prices they charge. Very disappointed!

I rarely speak negatively about any place but this restaurant is by far the biggest disappointment we have experienced by far in the peterborough area. Family all ordering salmon teriyaki and sun dobu chingae (the only few korean dish that they still have). No kimchi, no tempura sauce. The salmon teriyaki is terrible, it was still raw, it was a raw salmon smothered with teriyaki sauce (photos). Told the server/owner about this and she apologized. We don't touch the salmon thinking that they wont charged us for this raw salmon but they did without any hesitation nor trying to make it right by offering to replace the dish. Well …we just paid and left and we share this experience to make potential customer aware. The sushi was so far from fresh, you can get a better quality sushi from T&T or from a pre-made sushi you can find from any Canadian groceries stores. Most of the Korean dishes were gone from the menu, even some that still on the menu, they don't have it anymore. I’m not too sure what is going on with this restaurant??? They should change their attitude and be more attentive towards the quality of the food that they serves before someone got sicks and this place will be sued.

It was our first time visiting this restaurant, and we were pleasantly greeted by the owners. We placed an order for the Sashimi Donburi with spicy sauce, tempura udon, and Dynamite roll. The food was clean and delicious. If we ever find ourselves in Peterborough again, we will definitely return to try other items on the menu. Thank you for the good experience.

We went for Valentine's day. The server was short with us and impersonal. When we asked for a small portion of noodles for our son, the server said they don't do that. We were also never asked if we wanted more water or anything else during our meal.

Some of the Maki sushi was put together haphazardly and nothing was unique in a medium sushi/maki platter. The rice was under seasoned as well. They charged us $10.95 for 6 pieces of imitation crab for our son. I was blown away by the price of such a cheap item that you can easily get at the grocery store.

After paying (with no tip - due to the bad service), the server asked if there was a problem with the service when she noticed there was no tip. She asked in a cold manner, rather than a concerned way. The damage had already been done and there was nothing that would have helped the situation as we had already paid. I said "no, it was alright". I then thanked the server and she said absolutely nothing to me, further solidifying her impersonal attitude. Another justification for not giving her a tip.

I would suggest people go to the other sushi restaurants in Peterborough, as they are much better in almost all regards.

UPDATE: in response to the owner replying to my review. How was the table hard to clean? I am pretty sure we put all the dishes on the sushi boat provided, to help clean up our table. Some gold fish crackers on the floor would take a simple sweep up, so don't try and blow that out of proportion. My children did not eat candy, so I don't even know what you are talking about. Also, it was NOT busy in the restaurant. There was only 3 or 4 tables with people at them.

Rather than make excuses, just learn...
