Updated: I have been back with the kids and it was a much better experience. The servers were different and they were very polite and fast! They still don’t warn you about the syrup on the kids pancakes but I remember based on my experience. I’ve increased my star rating because we have enjoyed our food and service there after going back a few more times. Thanks!
It was my first time at this restaurant. I took my little kids here for brunch. My kids are 3 and 1. It was just myself and my kids and I read they have a nice kids menu option.
The server sat us down by the door and she was considerate to close the door that was left open since the little ones were there with me.
I ordered the kids waffle for my 3 year old and kids pancake for my 1 year old. The menu did not specify anything about the meal other than you pick either pancake or waffle, 1 egg, 1 meat option.
I also ordered a classic breakfast myself which was fantastic.
So the server took my order and left. She only asked what kind of toast I wanted. When the kids meals arrived they were soaked in quite a bit of maple syrup. Now I didn’t even think to ask for syrup on the side or no syrup. There was nothing on the menu that said syrup will be poured on by the kitchen. And the server didn’t ask me if my kids were okay with syrup.
So I scraped/poured off what I could from my 3 year old’s waffle and he started eating. My 1 year old pancake was soaked in syrup so I didn’t give that to her. I told the server when she came that I didn’t know there was going to be syrup on the kids meals and her response was, “anywhere you go syrup comes on pancakes and waffles.” I said usually in other restaurants syrup is on the table and you can pour it yourself. I also said it’s not written on the menu anywhere. Her response was just “No”.
So I ordered another kids pancake breakfast with no syrup for my 1 year old.
At the end the kids were happy and well fed and I enjoyed my meal.
When I got the bill I was charged for the extra kids meal.
She didn’t offer to just remake the pancake with no syrup and when I told her my 1 year old can’t eat this much syrup she seemed like she really didn’t care and that it was my problem. So she kind of just stood there and I ordered another pancake kids meal. So now I have all this extra food that I had to pay for that I didn’t want.
Sad to say, it was my first visit and I was very disappointed with the older lady server. It’s her fault for not clarifying there is syrup (a lot of syrup) on the kids meals and the restaurant’s fault for not putting “served with syrup on top” in the kids menu. If it has said it on the menu or she asked and I messed up I would expect to pay for an extra meal. But I don’t think I should have had to pay for the extra kids meal, given the circumstance. I didn’t appreciate the lady server’s lack of understanding. It was my first time out with the kids by myself and it’s a lot to juggle which went really well, I just did not leave feeling happy because the server made me feel like it was my fault. There was no sympathy that I was there by myself with 2 little kids and she could have been more understanding.
Be aware - the kids meals have a lot of syrup on them and you have to remember yourself to ask for no syrup or have it on the side. You won’t be asked and it’s not...
Read moreWhere have I been? Why have I waited so long before visiting here? This was an ideal morning to have breakfast with visiting friends at a cozy little local establishment that serves meals where the meals have love and pride in ever serving. Being Sunday morning, we all ordered similar; 3 Eggs Benidict with avacado and an Eggs Benidict with Spinich. There was nothing but ooo’s, ahhhh’s and yummm’s that came from our table. Specifically, the eggs were perfect, and I would like to verify, but I think the eggs were either “free run” or “free range” bacause their flavor was outstanding😋. The sauce was creamy, smooth and full of flavor. The bacon, was .... bacony deliciousness from the source we all know it should be from. The garnishing of roasted tomato and slivers of green onion was also a nice touch. This elevated each dish to a sophistication that made this entire experience feel special. The hashbrowns were shredded potatoes pan fried with the edges crispy and golden to everyone’s delight. I could have had more but I not sure if I would have finished the meal, which would have been a crying shame. If I had to complain about anything, the coffee was “meh” or ordinary - not saying it was bad, simce we did have refills, just not at the same standard of enjoyment as the meal, which was outstanding! Thank you for being in my neigborhood of Port Coquitlam! 😊😃😍🥰😘😁 PS: Lest I forget, the next time we come, I will ensure one of us tries the Chicken & Waffles. A neigboring table ordered it, and it looked amazing.
UPDATE: This is to report after some Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted. Jimmy’s Lunch Box has opened with limited capacity but I was so happy to see with these limitations lunch tables were filled, even at 1:30pm. Jimmy’s is the type of establishment that once you have tried their food, you want them to succeed. This is a place everyone should try. So without taking table space, we decided to order and take away. We ordered the Reuben sandwitch and Fried Chicken which both came with fries. Amazing! The sandwitch is on our “order it again” list. Loaded with sauerkraut and corned beef and grilled on rye, lest we forget the egg mixed in with these savoury contents. The Fried Chicken was also very hard to beat. Three pieces of Crispy tender boneless thighs with a drizzle of honey on the batter. Every crumb was not left behind and, this is another hit item that we will return for. While we were waiting for our meal to be made, we observed an order of their very popular Eggs Benny being made and I can confirm that the Benny sauce is made fresh and in very small batches, possibly per order.
Follow up visit: Still reliable, delishious, warm and friendly. This time it was breakfast. Jimmy’s is good at all they do, but breakfast is what they promote. I feel the whole team are All-Stars! Eggs Benny (any), Great! Waffle platter, Very good. If I was to look for any improvement, it would be “please, MORE hashbrowns. They are...
Read moreThis is now Kang's Diner as it has changed ownership though the signage is the same. What I liked: *clean appearing including bathroom *good amount of seating for a smaller spot *decent amount of parking on side street *arrived at 11:30 on a Tuesday and there were seats available *menu had lots of interesting offerings *the Denver skillet was hot and good for a diner but priced on the high side What I think they need to work on: *took awhile to greet us when we entered the restaurant. Even if you need people to wait, you should say, "Hello, welcome, I'll be with you shortly" and mean it *coffee, tea and water order taken right away but more than 15 min before it was brought to us and our main order taken. Again, letting your customers know if you are brewing a new pot or some other reason why it is taking longer than it should. *mains took another 30 min to be delivered. It was 45 min from entering a diner to eating. We never got the jam we asked for. *instead of waiting, we went to register to pay so we could leave under an hour. Our take: really understaffed on the front end and/or does not know how to run a front end in a diner. The entire time we were there the table next to us was covered in dirty dishes and the 3 people who sat the other side of us had to get their own menus. Until I see people raving about this spot, I won't be going back. There are other breakfast/lunch spots that I can eat at for under the $60+tip we...
