I originally set out for a Costco run, only to realize it was closed for the holiday. A quick search for nearby restaurants unexpectedly led me to a hidden gem tucked away in the community of Port Coquitlam โ Patina Brewing Co. This craft brewery has a humble white exterior that doesnโt stand out much, but once you step inside, it opens up into a spacious, well-equipped brewery-restaurant with a warm and inviting atmosphere.
๐ฝ๏ธ Food Experience
Patina doesnโt offer pre-set platters, but instead allows you to build your own customized meal. We went with a 6oz portion of American-style brisket, paired with fries and cornbread. The brisket was tender and juicy, the fries were crispy, and the sweet cornbread tied everything together beautifully โ a very satisfying combo.
We also tried one of the serverโs recommendations โ smoked chicken leg with Belgian waffle. Itโs definitely a unique pairing, though personally, I found the Belgian waffle a bit too sweet for my liking. I think I wouldโve enjoyed the dish more if it came with a more neutral-style waffle. The chicken leg itself had a light smoky flavor, but overall, the taste was on the mild side โ not bold, but still pleasant for those who prefer something lighter.
๐บ Craft Beer
Patina offers a wide variety of beers that rotate with the seasons. We tried their award-winning Italian Pilsner, which took home a silver medal at the BC Beer Awards. It was crisp and dry with a strong finish โ perfect for fans of classic European-style beers.
Personally, Iโm more into juicy, fruit-forward IPAs. I chose the Juicy IPA, which is full of citrus and tropical fruit flavors. Itโs smooth, slightly sweet, with low bitterness โ a super refreshing pick that I think would appeal to many female drinkers.
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ Family-Friendly Atmosphere
One of the biggest surprises for me was how family-friendly this brewery is. I saw several new moms with strollers and plenty of parents dining with their kids. Itโs rare to find a brewery with such an inclusive and welcoming vibe โ definitely a plus!
๐ท๏ธ Growler Refill Service
As we were leaving, we noticed they offer a growler refill service. You can purchase a 64oz glass growler for around $11.20 and refill it with any beer of your choice for $11โ$13 per fill. I went with my favorite Juicy IPA, which cost $13 to fill. Altogether, with the growler and taxes, the total was about $26 โ perfect for enjoying at home later!
This unexpected visit to Patina Brewing Co. left me with a great impression. Between the food, the beer, and the relaxed family-friendly vibe, Iโd absolutely...

To clarify their Sunday Brunch Hours: on their website it currently says brunch is from 11am to 2pm, but their Instagram (on this day, May 19/24) listed it as 10:30am to 1:30pm. I asked our server and he confirmed that they just changed it to 10:30am to 1:30pm.
โI asked for a paper menu as it's easier to view, rather than scrolling through up & down on a small phone screen, but all they had was ghetto outdated one with tape covering items they no longer offered, with no prices listed, and NO BRUNCH ITEMS LISTED. -I ordered their Breakfast Hash: hashbrowns and veggies, topped with a poached egg & hollandaise sauce, for $14.50. I missed reading that it listed "a poached egg" meaning 1 egg. After my food was served, I realized there was only 1, and to get a 2nd one, it was an extra $4 ๐คฏ. The original poached egg came VERY thoroughly cooked, so there was no ooey-goodness. When I ordered my 2nd poached egg @$4 ๐, and I made sure to ask for this over-priced egg to be cooked medium, to my liking.... so I could enjoy the ooey-gooey yumminess. -The "veggies" were a couple of small pieces of green onion, and I think I found a couple tiny chunks of yellow pepper, under the hollandaise sauce. -There was no coffee listed on their menu, paper nor online, but I asked cuz I saw a small coffee bar setup close to their kitchen. Wasn't sure if that was just for Staff, or if they were serving it to patrons too. Luckily, they WERE serving it to patrons, so I was happy about that, and it was pretty good coffee. My husband asked for a cup too, after realizing it was a decent cup 'o coffee, but he had to ask multiple times because they forgot to bring it to him. -We were brought 2 sets of cutlery, there were 3 of us.
Overall, the staff were friendly & the food was flavourful. I'd consider giving them another try for brunch. -May 2024 experience-- Brought rating down to 3โ Oct 2021: Hubby loves this place, but I just haven't had the chance to join him each time he's been. I've tried it out a couple of times now, and each time has been very enjoyable. They have a very COVID safe environment! Their food is yummy and great lineup of beverages to try! I'll definitely always order their Double Dipper and Cornbread ๐!! And their staff are very friendly and welcoming! -Oct 202...
ย ย ย Read moreMyself and a friend decided we needed BBQ and met up here on St Paddyโs day for dinner.
I love a good BBQ and from the photos on their website, this looked like a pretty good place. To bad...
When the server came to our table, he asked for our order. We told him weโd start with candied bacon and then gave him our order for mains. I ordered the โfullโ rack of ribs with the โcreamyโ mac n cheese. My friend ordered chicken and waffles.
About 10 mins after we put in our order, another server brought everything out and put it in the table.
The candied bacon wasnโt bad tasting but for $7 bucks, three strips? Sorry! It took us about 2 mins and down the hatch. We had to fight over the third piece.
Next... on to the mains.
The โcreamyโ mac n cheese was anything but creamy and for the most part, lacked any taste. I would have preferred a box of Kraft more than this. The ribs... I think the pig must have been the tiniest of piglets. I smoke ribs regularly... that was not a full rack.
But the worst thing about this restaurant? Iโm pretty sure everything is precooked and held for a few hours under a heat lamp. It had that taste and texture where you know itโs been sitting around for hours.
I wonโt talk about my friends meal as I didnโt try any of it... but it also looked like it had been under a heat lamp for a few hours.
Unfortunately, I didnโt try the beer. I was driving. Perhaps that is the thing to order here... save the food for one of the neighbourhood food trucks?
Itโs too bad though. I love a good BBQ and usually brewery food is pretty good (think Strathcona? Think Andinaโs). Such potential lost, because it does have a nice ambiance.
Needless to say, I wonโt be returning until they change their food philosophy. Nobody wants food that has been precooked and sitting around waiting...
