We decided to go to this place instead of Donaire Affiar as it appears much cleaner and it was closer. Unfortunately, the food was a miss. Maybe the Donaire is better than what we ordered but our dishes weren't edible. We both had a few bites and then dumped it out.
We ordered beef rice platter. Expensive (35$ for 2). We were expecting it to be like most other Donair restaurants in the preparation but I guess that's our fault for not asking. I'll start at the rice. It was plain white steamed sticky rice. Weird. I've NEVER been given plain steamed rice at a Greek restaurant or Donair restaurant. Again, guess we should have asked first. Usually the rice is, at the VERY least, cooked in broth. Often there are onions and parsley. Anyways, the rice was placed in the rectangle Togo dish, filling almost the entire container.
The salad (supposed to be Greek salad but it wasn't) was the next issue. It was soft wilted lettuce (possibly butter lettuce) with a couple random paper thin tomato triangles and cucumber triangles. Theyre sliced so thin they're translucent. No dressing. No feta. No oregeno. And lettuce? Again, a rice platter typically comes with Greek salad which is chunks of tomato cucumber onion oil/vinegar, oregeno feta. Also, it was shoved in the bottom corner under the rice and given that the veg was already sliced so thin, it was just slimy mush.
The next was the beef. I mean, possibly the Donair is better but if the beef is prepared this way too then I can't see it being tasty. The beef was about 2/3 of a portion I would receive from Donair Affair. The size wasn't the biggest problem though, the flavor and texture wasn't great because it was sliced right off the spit and placed on top of the rice and salad. It wasn't put on the flat top prior to serving, so it was pretty mushy and not crispy on the edges and just all around not great. It was "ok" but grossed me out after a couple bites. Everything was just so steamy and mushy and wet. The combo of the sticky rice with the mushy slimy salad and the steamed beef was not good. I typically am a pretty forgiving customer too. On top of the meat was a squirt of tzatski and then that was it. There was 2 hard thin triangles of Costco style pita served in a seperate bag. Not soft in the slightest. Haha the bread was the only part that wasnt mush. There was also no hommous which was also unusual.
So yeah I would only return if they switched the takeout container for the platter dish, to an actual takeout platter style container. That has a seperate square for salad and a seperate one for Homous and then the longer part in the front of the container for the rice and beef. But the rice would also need to change and the beef also would need to be grilled.
For 12.99 at Donair Affair I get more beef that's grilled, proper Greek rice, 1 entire large soft pita, served with Homous, proper Greek salad, feta, tzatsiki, garlic sauce, tomato and onion. And it's all packaged well so we to not make it slimy or mushy. If someone else was paying at Tasty Donair, I might try a donair instead- but I'm not keen to return. The restaurant is lacking atmosphere but that's because it's a strip mall in an industrial area. It did appear quite clean which was good. Service was quite nice also. Polite, kind, effecient and friendly...
Read moreNEW OWNERSHIP After eating at this location for 20 years I will no longer be eating here. I come in and right away I notice something is up, the dining area has changed, there is no table outfront of the store to sit at and I see new staff so I thought what the heck I’ll give them a try, oh how I regretted it right away. First and foremost the staff were wearing ear buds and chatting with someone over the phone, so while taking my order they would have me repeat myself because they couldn’t hear me over their ear buds. - very unprofessional right off the bat. Now the girl was friendly I will say and the guy there didn’t say much. Now here comes the worst part, the donair itself was super skimpy than usual. Hardly any meat was added just lettuce and other veggies were noticeable on every bite. Not only that the prices have gone up tremendously. Now almost $15 for a donair combo compared to $13 before the new owners. Also she wouldn’t let me have a bottle of coke when ordering the donair, only the small 355ml can. Which I thought was odd considering the old man had no problem charging less and giving more when it came to both the quantity of ingredients in the donair AND the sodas. False advertising at best and maybe they should rethink the way they operate this donair shop considering these are things that need improvement after just one visit since new ownership. Sadly that was enough for me and i...
Read moreHave been coming to this place for approximately 6-7 years now and would always drive out of my way when I was headed for a donair.
I understand it’s new ownership as I went with my girlfriend the a few months ago and we noticed a change in quality and portion sizes. I don’t usually write bad reviews but I must this time because I now feel sick after ordering their donair poutine.
Couple bites into it I noticed this pungent taste to it. I thought okay maybe it’s just a different gravy, 1-2 bites later I couldn’t eat it anymore. was way too strong and sickening, I narrowed it down to the cheese and I understand it may just be a different brand of cheese but the pungent taste I was tasting made me think the cheese packets had gone bad due to taste.
Have ordered there twice since new ownership and unfortunately both didn’t go very well. Sad to say might be our last time...
