Bualai Taste of Thai — Restaurant in Port Hope

I was shocked with all the great reviews - perhaps I should have stuck with the recommended items? But I think there’s something else going on here. This evening I ordered the Tamarind Fish and the fish was piled high - 3 pieces of what looked like large battered pieces of fish. When I ordered, didn’t notice or read it was battered fish - I don’t eat deep fried batter, like fish & chips type. As such, I proceeded to remove the batter and low and behold there was 1 piece of fish that didn’t fill more than 1 fork full of fish and the other 2 pieces was deep fried fish skin - no more fish!!! I should have sent it back right then but I didn’t have time to order something else and thought well I’ll at least have the veggies. I proceeded to remove the batter from my plate and realized there were only 5 pieces of diced carrots and some onion and celery but mainly just loaded with sauce! My dinner consisted of mainly rice and sauce!! I notified the waitress mentioning only the lack of fish and she said she would tell the cook but offered no apologies or any real concern. The cook later came out to speak with someone coming in late for takeout and didn’t even glance over at me - clearly she too was not concerned with my experience. The person requesting takeout was specifying to the cook that to deliver the food WITHOUT sauce - hmmm...I guess I wasn’t the only one with this experience here. Not sure why anyone would return here with so many great alternatives in Port Hope. The food here (if you can call, batter, rice and sauce an entree at all) was terrible and the service worse!! Will never return and fair warning to all! The one star is only because there’s no lower rating. Wish I had read a review like mine before I wasted my time and money here! In fact, this is my very first review to warn people as I wish I had been warned. If I wanted such a meal I could have just purchased some sauce and rice at the grocery store and saved myself the trouble - that’s just not the kind of meals I choose or enjoy. When I go to a restaurant the staff generally have some concern about whether I enjoy my meal - in fact, I wasn’t even asked once!! I feel absolutely robbed of my money and dignity!...

We went for dinner in Sept 2023 when I found I that I couldn’t finish my food. The server took it to the kitchen to put it in a plastic container. Usually the staff would bring the container to the table so I could pack it myself. I found that to be a little strange. She handed me the plastic container with the food and we came home. Later I wanted to eat what was in the container. I warmed it up and started to eat it when I bit into something! It was a Staple!! There could have been problems as you could imagine if I swallowed it or bit harder and it could have ruined my dental work. I informed the restaurant of the incident. Their apology alone doesn’t cut it. We were told our next meal would be on the restaurant. However when we went we were met with apologies and were only going to give us the appetizer for free!!! That was not what we had been promised. We didn’t get our free meal. That showed poor customer service and we were disappointed and dissatisfied would not go back nor recommend this...

Impressive atmosphere and food but bit bitter at the end. . .

First time eating at this Thai restaurant after passing by it many many time. The authentic Thai décor caught my eyes as soon as I entered the restaurant. Very unique water jar, table cloth and ceiling fan. The washrooms are located on the 2nd floor, so keep that in mind if mobility is an issue.

Food is Fantastic, highly recommend the veggie spring rolls. We ordered pad Thai, Pineapple fried rice and fish for my family (for 3 adults and 2 kids).

My experience for the entire evening was great until one setback that really leaves me a bad taste. . . They added around 17% “service charge” before tax to my bill. I know some restaurants do this for a larger party but not in my case and this is out of my principle. Warning: watch your bill.
