We visited for their $80 for 2 people blind tasting menu. I was thinking it would be hard to go wrong for that price, but they managed to prove me wrong.
The food itself was decent, with some very good dishes. The appetizers were head cheese and hummus. Both were decent, nothing to complain about.
Next came the eggplant croquette? and the beef tartare. The eggplant dish was excellent, the tartare was good and fresh but again, very basic and traditional.
The entree, the fish was the star of the show. Honestly, one of the best fish dishes I’ve eaten. So based off this it seems like there’s nothing wrong.
But let’s get to the negatives which unfortunately overshadowed the food.
Service was choppy. They brought the starters but forgot to bring out the bread, so we’re just sitting there for 5 minutes before they realized. A bunch of very small service issues. By itself it’s very minor, but they add up. The oyster didn’t come with the pineapple salsa/sauce, the took away cutlery and never brought new ones (was only left with a fork), and the timing of the food and checkups were sporadic. They got busy and service slipped. After we got our appetizers, we probably waited 30-40 minutes for our entree and only got checked up on once. It then took an additional hour to get the dessert (which we took to go because we had other plans) and had to lineup to pay the bill. In between this time, we only got checked up once again. No apologies about the slow service or heads up that the kitchen was behind or slow.
I’m happy the restaurant is busy on a Wednesday, but honestly it’s some of the worst service I’ve experienced. We arrived around 5:40 pm and it was maybe a 1/4 full and didn’t leave until 8 pm, and the majority of the time was simply waiting for the entree and dessert.
With all that being said, the bottleneck seemed to be the kitchen, but nothing was done to appease the guests. With there being so many great restaurants, I can’t recommend coming here, at least for their...
Read moreThis is a severely underrated restaurant which serves dangerously delicious food at reasonable prices. We ordered half a dozen of oysters, duck ham, bluefin tuna from the Gaspéie, foie gras and flank steak to share.
Basically we don't speak French at all but the servers could speak very fluent English. Our server carefully went through each item on the menu and explained what it was, where did it come from and what's in the dish. Even though we could not make up our mind and half thinking about sharing, the server gave us time and encouraged us to share, which resulted in us over ordering somewhat, but the amount was at the end just nice.
The oysters were really fresh and rich which was well worth the price. The duck ham required quite a lot of skill to prepare and it tasted really rich as well but not gamey at all. What's interesting was the foie gras, it was very creamy and nice, and the brioche bread complemented it perfectly. The bluefin tuna and flank steak were perfectly executed with the sauces and garnishing.
Overall, it was a really excellent dining experience and the attention as well as service level was top notch. I would definitely want to come back here again and this will always be on my check list when I visit (hopefully their standard don't drop as they gain more...
Read moreWe had a fantastic experience on a Tuesday night at La Planque! Everything from the meal to the ambience was excellent. All of the service staff was so welcoming and friendly. Our server Edouard was a true gem. Very considerate and attentive. My wife is celiac and we were fortunate enough to be able to try the blind tasting menu. What a deal!! Amazing value and the food was delicious! We started with a half dozen oysters too (not included in the tasting menu) which were accompanied by two of their homemade sauces (chili lime and a vinaigrette) oysters were very fresh and flavourful and the sauces were wonderfully balanced and tasty. The tasting menu was just as good but I won’t ruin the surprise! There was also a great wine selection of which we enjoyed a couple glasses of the orange wine from local wine maker Genevieve Thisdel - superbe! Would recommend La Planque to anyone visiting...
