Amy's Fish & Chips — Restaurant in Richmond Hill

Today is Good Friday and we know how busy it is so decided to order Halibut Fish and chips for our family of 5 via Uber Eats from here early in the day with an advance delivery window b/w 6:15 -6:45pm. Monitoring the app and all is good and states order should be there at 6:15pm. Then it updated to order should be there at 6:35. Suddenly at 6pm get a notice that order is cancelled and restaurant is not picking up calls and now shows unavailable. We call Uber and they are not helpful at all. We take a 20 min drive to Richmond Hill from Vaughan to find out what happened as good still shows it is open. Husband speaks to someone who says they see the order and they canceled because they turned off delivery from app at 5pm. My husband explains that we ordered way before that and it was not even canceled until 6pm. Person said they have now run out of Halibut and only have enough for their existing orders to fulfill. This doesn't help us and our 3 kids that we were waiting on food to be delivered at 6:15 but canceled at 6pm. Was over at the nearby Costco and could not do the usual Costco lunch. Was contemplating heading to Old York FC but that’s a big drive and then came across Amy’s on google. Lucky me! Not sure if it’s Friday special but they had lunch deal hand written on bristle board. Real mom and pop style. Haddock or cod and chips plus pop. $10 Thought I’d give it a shot. Take out Didn’t take long. Guy taking order wears headphones and sorta is interested but there’s a general blandness to the place. Not unfriendly but not exactly pleasant. Regardless. Fish arrived and I headed out and checked the bristle board and noticed the pop included part. Had to go back to headphone guy to get the pop. Guess he forgot! For the special you get 5 oz haddock which is sort of medium size. Quality of fish very good and batter was light and not typical English style oily grease. It was delicate. Fries good too. The people giving this place a good rating MUST be the owner's friends or family...talk about false advertising. Trust me, believe the negative reviews, this place is nothing great. We ordered their fish and chips (haddock and halibut as well as the coleslaw and the gravy with fries). Terrible experience, the fish was SUCH a small portion, there is more batter to made it look bigger but there is barely any fish and it is quite scaly. The fish is so dry and bland, while is batter is too oily - no flavour whatsoever. The fries were soggy and they don't give you enough even for a single person to eat. The gravy was severely watered down and didn't have the kind of flavour that gravy is supposed to. The coleslaw was gross, swimming in water almost and had a strange taste, as if it had been sitting there for days.
