Thai Son in Richmond has a long history of being a popular place for Vietnamese food. It is primarily authentic food, with little in the way of adaptation to other cultures. That's a good thing in my mind.
The restaurant was busy, very busy. Every table was in use and there was a line of people waiting for a table. I wish they would take names; but the staff seem content to let the line manage its' self. It does seem to work, as we were quickly seated.
Service is very fast paced. There seems to be no time for pleasantries. Our order was taken and food delivered, that's about it. Wait staff did not return to check on us and you just approach the cash register when you want to pay. Be aware: this restaurant only accepts cash.
The place was not perfectly clean. As busy as it was, how could it be clean? Our table was well wiped though, and we had no problems with dirty dishes or cutlery.
The food was delicious. We had porkchops and shredded pork skin on broken rice with a sunny side up egg. I also had the pork salad rolls. Everything was so tasty and well done. It's nice to find a restaurant without cutting corners by plating this dish using long grain rice. Broken rice has a distinct texture that is needed in this dish. My only concern was post-meal swelling. Too much salt? Perhaps. Or were they using MSG? In any case, those who are sensitive may want to use caution.
I can say I loved my meal, and the shortcomings are minor. Well worth a visit when...
Read morethis place is so horrible to me. I went to this restaurant morning today. I was so hungery and I ordered a large beef soup and then that situation was just happened. I asked a staff to give a small ball for sauce and then she gave me this and she said you want a souce ball and I said yes. until now she was okay even though her voice was a little anrgry after then I asked her a small ball for my noodle soup that was very hot for me. this is just my little senlcond request. but as long as I asked this ball to her, she glared at me so rudly and she even made a noise " hu hu" and she just threw a souce ball in the table.I felt so bad. I really got mad of her..I even felt no hungry. I didn't say anything when she gave me this ball but now I regret that I didnt complain about this...I felt so insulted even my feeling was still not good...I couldn't forget this happening still now. I only ate just half of soup and still not good mood. I think she was a kitchen staff because she back to the kitchen when she gave me this ball. other staff seemed to be okay. but she was sooooo rude. this experience that I never ever had before. she made me my day so bad today. Read moreMy wife and I have been to this Thai Son multiple times as it is close to Walmart for grocery shopping.
The restaurant is very spacious and clean plus there is plenty of seating. The servers are always very friendly so it's a very comfortable environment while enjoying your meal.
My wife ordered the Pho Dac Biet which is their house special combination beef (different types like rare beef, tendon, tripe, etc) with rice noodles in soup. The noodles were bouncy and chewy, the meat was plentiful while the soup had great umami beef taste.
I ordered their Banh Xeo Rau Song which is a special vietnamese crispy crepe that had pork, shrimp, squid and different veggies inside it. Even though the crepe looks like it is an egg, it is actually made out of rice flour, water and turmeric powder. Also this dish comes with side veggies that you would use the lettuce to make a wrap with the Banh Xeo and add other veggies like pickled daikon, pickled carrots and cucumbers with fish sauce. It was so yummy.
Will definitely be coming...
