I am going to give a very transparent review of Sushi Garden. My first impression was over the phone with the Male owner, he was very courteous and even sent me a picture of the menu over text as I was curious if the menu photos online were still current (they are). This showed great personal care to each customer, which I wasn’t even yet and opened the door to a positive experience My partner and I arrived, placed our order for the food, we had planned to sit down but found that it was only takeout which was a minor let down but understandable, we took it to AD Penner park and ate at the picnic area which was also nice. However because of this I am not able to rate the atmosphere of the restaurant higher, it appeared nice. We were told our food would take 30 minutes so we waited and it was done slightly before so the timing was accurate.
We ordered Salmon Donburi 2 Lunch Specials -Dynamite and Smoked salmon -Dynamite and Nigiri And a Crunch roll This came out to a total of $50 which is a phenomenal price for that amount of food. We got given drinks without the choice but I’m certain if we asked to change they’d accommodate. *A note about the Lunch specials, it would be nice if every lunch special didn’t have Dynamite as a requirement as a base roll.
Now onto the food, *the reviews will be transparent as my partner and I have extensive sushi experience both international and domestic. We opened the bag to be pleasantly surprised to find an assortment of treats and crackers thrown into our order at no charge (pocky, biscotti and some crackers). This was nice
Food review: Salmon Donburi (apx $15) A typical donburi contains a protein (meat, fish, egg) veggies, and sauces. The donburi we recieved looked good from the surface, however on inspection of the protein (salmon) it was found that the grey (fat) layer between the meat and the skin was still on the fish, this leads me to assume the fish was purchased in filet form and not processed from a whole fresh fish. The color was also a duller orange, not as bright as fresh salmon as well as little visible fat marbling, meaning a lower quality or not a fresh fish. The price of $15 led to the assumption of this and we were correct which wasn’t the best, it could have certainly been better. The composition of the donburi was Rice, then avocado, cucumber, topped with Salmon, there was no sauce and it gave the impression of a rice and veggie salad topped with salmon. This isn’t bad but I feel the item could be expanded to include a sauce, and smaller sized pieces of cucumber/avocado. Presentation: 8/10 Composition: 3/10 Flavour: 5/10
Next review is the Crunch roll (apx $11) The crunch roll was presented beautifully, it was large, with thinner than usual roll thickness. The roll was loose and this caused it to fall apart somewhat easily, this was also consistent with the dynamite roll. Overall the flavour of the Crunch roll was good, the mayo/crabstick mixture was interesting, my partner wasn’t a fan but I enjoyed it. The main con was the amount of rice on the roll. There was lots. Presentation: 7.5/10 Composition: 6/10 Flavour: 7/10
Next is the Lunch combos $12. This is where we found they stand out. The lunch combos were under $12 and with it you get to choose between a couple and a drink. I got the Dynamite + smoked salmon roll and my partner got the Dynamite + Salmon nigiri. The dynamite roll was identical to the crunch roll, minus tempura flakes, and substitute shrimp for the salmon. Since there are many similarities I will say its review is similar to the crunch roll above. The smoked salmon roll had the same problem of too much rice, and the smoked salmon looked like it was bought from a store but the flavour was actually great. The nigiri was similar quality to the salmon on the Donburi.
Overall for the price Sushi Garden is a great place to go for the lunch menu and rolls, however the Donburi, Sashimi, and Nigiri could use some improvement! Donburi: 3/10 Rolls: 7/10 Value: 8.5/10
I would go back to eat the lunch menu as the value is phenomenal. Thanks...
Read moreNormally I do not leave reviews unless I can give 5 stars (I just don't like being negative) but I feel obligated to share a "Dislike" review on account of getting violently ill after dining here.
Walking into this establishment my first impression was that it was a calm and layed back place. Kind of on the dark side, but it was clean.
It took 30 minutes for someone to come and take my order. There was only one other person sitting in the resaurant at the time. Not sure why it took so long. Take out orders, maybe?
I do not like sushi so when I go to a Japanese restaurant I order soup, tempura, a rice or noodle dish.
I was served warm water with no ice. I waited another 30 minutes for my food. I ordered vegetable tempura and a chicken/noodle dish.
It was tasteless. No flavour at all and it hurt my stomach almost instantly :(
I got violently ill that night. I paid $30.00 for vomit and diarrhea.
The 2 stars are because of my server. Although she took forever to acknowledge me and the language barrier; she was very sweet and kind.
I always dine at a place twice if the food is bad (Second chance) 'Cause you never know if it was just an off day.. But I cannot risk putting my guts through that again, I'm sorry :(
Maybe their Sushi...
Read moreI really enjoy this restaurant. I feel like their sushi is really good considering it's Steinbach. You'd pay more for the same quality in Winnipeg. I do find that service is hit or miss in terms of timeliness and checking up on my table, which is a bit of a drawback. My favourite roll has always been the dynamite roll but the last two times I've gone the shrimp tempura inside has been obviously a reheated or second-day piece. Pretty easy to tell since the tempura coating was soggy rather than crisp. I even added an order of tempura the second time (thinking that since the fryer was going they'd cook a fresh piece for my roll but no such luck).
Overall I still like the place and I'll keep going back. Might not order the dynamite roll anymore since it's not great without that crispy tempura bite in the middle, but they have a lot...
