My father wanted to take us out for dinner for our anniversary the week prior - being a pensioner on a budget its a tad on the expensive side for him, might have been better suited as a romantic dinner spot for just me and my husband. That being said, the service was good, it also wasn't busy so food arrived timely. Being on Keto there was little for me to select from and not a whole lot of interest to me on the menu, so went with the Pear Salad. IMO, a bit sad for $15 , the cupful of mixed greens, a few pecans, a few dabs of blue cheese (the tastiest thing on the plate) with a half sliced rather tasteless green pear drizzled in a vinegrette. Since they offered no Salads in their entree section, this was under their appetizers. Also being respectful of my Dads pocketbook, and every other entree over $28 if you wanted a 'side' with it. My husband had the Mussels and Pomme Frites. He thoroughly enjoyed the mussels and said he'd come back for them. The Pomme Frites however were a big disappointment, +$7 for 'fries' - no where near authentic Pomme Frites. Take some pointers Chefs - go to Palm Springs CA to Pomme Frite for lovely French and Belgian food that will impress you and make you feel...'now THAT was money well spent :)!'
I would not return based on this experience and based solely the food impressions and pricing. Atmosphere is cozy, nice and I'd even say romantic in a rustic type setting. I suppose I should no longer be surprised that restaurants in small villages that may struggle through off season business still charge the same exhorbitant pricing as if you were downtown Vancouver (White Rock being littered with them). In reading through the rest of the reviews its obvious this place has its fans, and a few critics. I always strive to be as objective as possible and I'm a tough judge given that I'm a very decent chef (this from my friends and family not just me being conceded). this was my first and will be my last visit. Sorry, but you only get one chance to make a...
Read moreI've never written a review of a restaurant before. My philosophy in life tends to be if you've nothing good to say about something, then say nothing at all. Sadly though, here's why I'm writing this one... I have dined here a few times when it first opened. I thought the food was fine but not remarkable enough to go back on a regular basis even though it's in my neighbourhood. Years pass and I go with some friends. My meal was, once again, decent, and the overall atmosphere and service was good - it's a charming little place near the beach. Because of this, I took 3 people there last weekend and ordered the half rack of lamb special. When the bill came, the lamb ended up being $46. Oddly, everything on their menu is about $20 less than that so we honestly hadn't expected this at all. I was recently at a 1 Michelin star restaurant in London and my main course was less pricey. And it must be said, at that level of fine dining price, expectations are high. This was plain cooked lamb on a messy plateful of watery ratatouille with two or three undercooked boiled potatoes. Very disappointing. I emailed the restaurant and politely stated that the server should advise the guest of the price of the specials. I pointed out that another review on Yelp had made virtually exactly the same complaint as I was making so perhaps it was time they took note. I never received a reply. Poor business practice. I...
Read moreThis my second time at seahorse grill restaurant in crescent beach probably my last. Beautiful Saturday evening restaurant not too crowded however there might have been many people in back of restaurant. I adjective about the size of the roasted beet goat cheese salad. Waiter said was good size definitely a meal. I was hungry I said. He assured me it would be sufficient I ordered it but held on to the menu. The salad greens were room temperature (finally someone didn’t serve ice cold greens) but i had to ask for salt and extra dressing as the dressing was either extremely light to non existant, while waiting for the condiments I noticed no fredh fruit and no walnut crunch on salad as the menu indicated and one ofvthe 5,reasons I ordered the salad. Beets weren’t roasted no walnuts no fruit and little to no dressing. Still hungry so had to order a meal. This time the waitress recommended the ravioli with prawns. She showed me the dish and it fid look good so I ordered it. It took 24?minutes to come a long time i think but ok. How was it she asked? Hmm ok. Ok? Yes it was so so. What’s written with it she asked. I was glad she asked. I said the rose sauce is watery and should be sweeter. She actually agreed. She said yes it us too acidic! Hmm ! No nit going back. I hate to think someone made it acidic for me…. But if the server agreed it wasn’t great sauce why not warn the patron. Didn’t enjoy...
