Great Spot for a Homestyle Meal – Ziggy’s Pub, Sydney River

Ziggy’s Pub is a tried-and-true choice whenever I visit Cape Breton. Centrally located in Sydney River, it’s a convenient and welcoming spot to meet up with family or friends and enjoy a hearty, homestyle meal.

On our most recent visit, we were a party of six, and everyone left full, happy, and with leftovers in hand! My parents loved the classic turkey dinner, complete with all the trimmings, while I enjoyed perfectly pan-fried haddock paired with a crisp Caesar salad. My brother ordered the fish and chips and had nothing but good things to say. And though I certainly didn’t need it, I couldn’t resist taking a slice of coconut cream pie to go—it was rich, creamy, and absolutely worth it.

The pub is clean, well maintained, and the bathrooms are spotless, which is always appreciated. If I had one wish, it would be for an outdoor patio space to take advantage of those beautiful Cape Breton summer evenings. And while the interior is comfortable, the atmosphere and decor could use a bit more character or charm to match the warmth of the food and service.

I would not recommend this place to anyone that enjoys food i went here 2 separate times and both times severely disappointed as a cook it’s hard for me to leave a nasty comment but this is needed the first time I went there I got a simple burger the burger was cold by the time I got it and honestly I would have preferred a frozen burger it was gross The second time I went back I got the surf and turf also disgusting I asked for medium rare and ended up eating a leather boot well over done it was also cold I don’t know if they cook everything in a microwave but by the looks of it I would assume they do. My wife and I had Ziggy's takeout recommended by a family member so we each ordered a cheeseburger and fries. If only we had known in advance what a mistake it would be. Neither meal was edible. In both cases, the fries were, at best, half cooked and soggy, like they had been dipped in water and looked like it, too. The burgers were so over spiced you couldn't taste the beef and cooked to within an inch of being identifiable. It was so bad the petroleum-based cheese product they used had almost completely evaporated, leaving only an orange-ish tinge to the blackened patty.
