This was my first experience with kimbap, and it really had me wondering why I’ve never tried it before! I’m a big fan of Korean food — especially bibimbap — so I figured this wouldn’t be much of a stretch from flavours I already knew I’d enjoy.
To get a sense of variety, I ordered three kinds: the bulgogi (which came with bulgogi beef, carrots, egg, pickled radish, romaine and a teriyaki-style dipping sauce), the spicy pork (similar in style to the bulgogi), and the dynamite (which included shrimp tempura, imitation crab, avocado, fish cake, and egg).
My favourites were the bulgogi — as a fan of thinly marinated beef — and the spicy pork, which paired really well with the other toppings. The dynamite roll, for me, felt a bit disconnected; the combination of traditional Japanese sushi ingredients and Korean flavours didn’t quite blend. It made me wish I were eating a classic Japanese-style dynamite roll rather than a fusion attempt that didn’t quite land.
As a bonus, my order came with odeng soup — a clear fish broth with fish cakes. While a nice accompaniment, I found it lacked richness and depth of flavour (though I don’t have a reference point to compare it to).
Overall, this was a positive and satisfying first kimbap experience that’s left me open and excited to...
Read moreThis is going to be my new favourite takeout spot! It's one of the few places downtown where you can get lunch for less than $10.
I tried the spam kimbap and it was delicious! It's probably more of a personal thing, but I like how it's not as seasoned as traditional kimbap so it feels lighter. The oden also hit the spot on a cold winter day.
They have a variety of options here and aside from the Dongrami roll, everything is priced reasonably. I saw the staff making my kimbap behind the counter so I can confirm it's freshly made to order, at least at lunch time. The refrigerated ones get discounted in the evening if you're looking for a...
Read moreKimbap was neatly wrapped, contained fresh ingredients, and tasted great. I Ordered the spicy pork kimbap, and Jaeyuk inside the roll tasted good. Staff were friendly and helpful.
I will be returning and trying more of their menu. Depending where you are in the city, it can be hard to find good kimbap. If you have eaten kimbap regularly form a place like 김밥천국, you'll notice that the rolls don't have that special 아주마 손 맛 (rolls feel a bit loose for example), but it is better than anything around, by far. The portions are a good size.
I also got the fishcake soup, and it was very forgettable. If you're really hungry, get two...
