Public Service Announcement: Avoid “Mystery Store” at INblack Escape Rooms (Eaton Location)
Having played close to 100 escape rooms across the globe, I can confidently say that the Mystery Store at InBlack was by far the most disappointing and poorly executed experience I’ve encountered to date both from a quality and logic standpoint and also down to the technical functionality and overall immersion.
The first red flag was the language barrier. It’s painfully obvious this room was designed for another market and lazily translated into English without any consideration for meaning or clarity. Instructions and prompts were riddled with spelling errors, missing letters, and phrasing that made no logical sense. This wasn’t a matter of difficulty, it was a matter of broken translation and incoherent design.
Worse yet, the room itself was technically dysfunctional. Even when our team entered the correct solutions, we often had to repeat them five or six times before the triggers actually registered. This kind of mechanical failure completely breaks immersion and undermines the satisfaction that makes escape rooms enjoyable in the first place.
The overall build quality also left much to be desired; cheap props, inconsistent logic, and clues that felt hastily cobbled together without testing or refinement. To make matters worse, the walkie-talkies used to request hints were full of static, making it nearly impossible to understand the staff.
Adding insult to injury, the rooms are not properly soundproofed. We could clearly hear both the groups in neighbouring rooms and their storyline videos, which was incredibly distracting. Given that the Mystery Store’s storyline video only plays once, it’s entirely possible to miss crucial information you’ll never hear again.
All in all, this was a frustrating, confusing, and ultimately joyless experience that my entire group considered walking out of halfway through. I wouldn’t recommend this room to anyone, even as a novelty. Save yourself the money and the disappointment.
Escape rooms should be immersive, clever, and rewarding. The Mystery Store is none of...
Read moreThis was my first time trying an escape room in Canada, and to be honest, I was extremely disappointed. InBlack is not suitable for anyone who has prior experience with escape rooms — it’s more of a novelty for those who’ve never tried one before and just want to see what it’s like. I understand there may be limitations due to cost and time, but this room fell short in many aspects, especially when it comes to player safety. We played “District 11.”
First, the pacing of the game felt very off. The game includes two long background videos that interrupt the flow and feel unnecessary. Password clues appeared abruptly without logical transitions. There was also a long segment where groups were separated and locked up — this part felt like intentional time-filler rather than meaningful gameplay. The final NPC acting, while not amazing, was at least a highlight.
Second, the physical interaction between NPCs and players was a major issue. Most escape rooms strictly prohibit physical contact, but here it was allowed — and worse, the force used was not well-controlled. One action involved gripping the neck, which is especially dangerous due to the nerves in that area. I experienced dizziness afterwards. Additionally, when players were locked in the room, air jets were used with no protection for the eyes — a clear safety concern.
Lastly, the marketing was highly misleading. The room was advertised as being very scary, but in reality, among the dozens of escape rooms I’ve played, this ranked near the bottom, especially when this is a theatrical experience than a puzzle-based one.
Overall, I do not recommend this escape room. There are far too many aspects that need...
Read moreEaton Location - Terrible experience. 1st, the lady at front desk had messed up our reservation times lots and would not take accountability firmly blaming us. 2ndly, we booked a private escape room and in the midst of all of this, they brought in two random people to join in with us. Thereafter, while doing the escape room, we had asked for a hint. That hint then turned into what seemed to be an immersive tutorial since the lady was then telling us all the answers of the escape room and not letting us figure it out for ourselves. it advertises that NPC’s will chase you, etc., etc. but it is just a girl dressed up as a little tiger that appears every now and then, not at all what they had advertised it as. Finally while doing the escape room, the audio had distorted and cut out leaving us no clear Instructions. The game then described that we had to be very quiet and Turn a valve when one of our team members had done so they had abruptly ended the escape room, not letting us complete it and told us to leave. When we were explaining ourselves, the same lady who gave us issues from the very beginning had a tremendous amount of attitude towards us, very rude and disrespectful, especially after spending over $30 a person, thankfully though, the manager was very understanding and had promised us a partial refund due to the negative experience, although we Have not received the refund as of yet. Therefore, based off my experience, I do not recommend the Eton location escape room. I am yet to try the other locations, but I cannot imagine them being worse than the customer service brought forth from the Eton location. I urge you not to...
