Excellent food but poor treatment by employees and Windex on my food.
If felt like they didn't want us there. We entered the restaurant and made our order. We sat at the front table by the window to be in the sunlight. The door was open a d a cold draft was coming in so we closed it as we were sitting right.next to the door. We started to eat and the lady came and opened up the door wide and we asked her to please leave it while we eat and she said it was too hot back there. We looked back in the restaurant to see everyone who was eating were wearing their sweaters and scarves and were clearly not hot. It was clear that the two employees were keeping it open for themselves and were not open to compromising with us. We ate our food in the cold winter draft with my coat on my legs. Midway through my meal I could t feel my feet and we kindly asked if we could close the door while we finished our meal. By this point we were the last customers and the two employees reluctantly said "okay".
We were close to finishing out meals and the one employee starts to Windex the door right next to us! Yeah.... We got Windex all over our food. It was gross and I had to be firm with her and tell her to stop. We were so turned off, so unimpressed that we just left our food there and walked out.
Bummer because the food was exceptional but those two girls were so rude and careless. It was evident they wanted to close up and kick us out. Yikes!
**In response to what was written to me by staff: I would like to say that as customers we have a right to choose where we sit in the restaurant. I shouldnt have to explain why we chose that particular spot but we did sit there to be in the sun, in fact, that is why we chose to try out that restaurant because of its sun facing windows. If a customer is uncomfortable the least that can be done is having an open conversation and perhaps even some compromise.
Windex in the air, in our noses, and near our food, hardly constitutes more than one star. we were the only guests in the restaurant and we were very close to finishing out meals. The employer could have started cleaning elsewhere in the space. My rating is such because of the overall attitude and vibe we received by the two employees throughout our experience. We were kind, polite, we explained our needs. You neglected to communicate honestly and openly with us or even compromise. Its about social graces and making the atmosphere feel safe and welcoming.
I apologies for my poor choice of words in addressing gender types. But you might want to consider why someone would leave such a specific review and take that much time out of their day to do so, before you start correcting them on...
Read moreStopped by Lox and Schmear for breakfast and this place seemed just perfect. The bagels are from St. Urbain in MTL which is a classic MTL style bagel. The bagels were good - soft and a little bit of chew.
The lox here is special. I really enjoyed it - perfectly smoked, soft and not too salty! The fish is sliced on the thicker side, which is great for this sandwich. The cream cheese and dill combines for a perfect bagel sandwich.
The gf had the Lev's bagel which she loved. The addition of dill chips and hot jalapenos raises the bar for the sandwich even further. Excellent combination here but it not be the best if you don't like a spicy sandwich for breakfast.
Overall a great place for lunch! A little bit on the pricey side considering how small the sandwich is but the quality of ingredients are evident. The next visit i plan to just buy the lox, which comes in the different seasonings, bagels from one of the many bagel bakeries in the neighborhood and then make the sandwiches at home.
L+S does have drip coffee but doesn't offer any espresso drinks which is not a big deal. The staff are kind and helpful.
Overall an excellent neighborhood spot for quality lox...

Wow, just absolutely wow. I heard great things about this place. but I had absolutely no idea how amazing the food was until I tried them for the very first time today.
Nestled along trendy hipster St. Clair Avenue West lies a very cute and welcoming place call Lox & Schmear and they are serving up some of the best bagels, cream cheese, capers, pickled onions, to elevate the star of the show the great SALMON!
Once you walk into Lox & Schmear, you are immediately hit with this sweet smokey aroma.
I ordered The Fancy Fancy because that's just what I am Fancy Fancy 🎭
The bagel was crisp on the outside and soft on the inside The cream cheese, along with the capers, tomato, cucumber, pickled red onion, alfalfa to give it that extra unique crunch, fresh dill that accompanied the lox was an explosion of great flavors!
The lox is so sweet and smoking at the same time.
Yum! It was probably one of the best things I've ever eaten!
So, if you're in the neighborhood, you have to give this place a try. Such friendly and inviting staff!
The bagels and lox are out of...
