I was leaving a doctor’s appointment nearby right around lunchtime and was hoping to find a place within quick driving distance to get a patty for lunch. When I saw that Phamilyeats was less than a 10 minute drive I knew I had to try it. I had been wanting to try these patties since the owner first started the business during pandemic.
Phamilyeats is a small takeout counter tucked away inside a tiny unassuming “food hall” of about 4 or 5 vendors right along a strip of shops on Eglinton. Be prepared to use street parking.
This is not the kind of space you want to really linger in for a long extended lunch. It’s really meant for takeout and not a super inviting space for a meal. It’s bright and seemed very clean but its definite purpose is to get people in and out. I actually can’t even remember if they had any seating at all (it’s entirely possible that they do!) and if they did it wasn’t the focus of the space.
The owner was such a nice guy. When I asked what the curry chicken patty was like he basically just gave me one to try out for free, without even knowing if I was going to buy anything else. Just a stand up, kind person. I took a bite out of the corner to let out some of the steam because it was piping hot, and the lovely curry smell wafting out was enough to make me drool, even though it was still too hot to even try the filling.
It didn’t take much more to convince me. I insisted on paying for the curry chicken he’d given me and got a spicy beef, vegan and second curry chicken to go for freezing later on.
Analysis: The pastry - 10/10. Perfect colour and flakiness and flavour compliments the filling. Not doughy or mushy and an excellent ratio of pastry to filling.
Curry Chicken - delicious!!! 10/10 for me. The first good sign is the beautiful curry smell as soon as you take your first bite. Has some spicy heat but not overwhelming. Just really well balanced and aromatic. I could seriously eat one every day.
Spicy beef - 8/10. By a quirk of how my day went I was supposed to freeze this one for another day but ended up having it for dinner LOLOLOL! No complaints. The beef is solid. Very tasty, the spicy heat is definitely there. I think my only critique would be that compared with the more complex flavours in the curry patty the beef one was a little one-note spice wise. The main flavour that hits (for me) was just the heat with less undertone of other flavours/spices. Would still have again, it’s very very good but the curry chicken definitely won my heart.
Vegan - c’mon!! SOMETHING had to go in the freezer for a ‘rainy’ day!! Hahahaha … this one is TBD and I’m looking...
Read moreVisited Phamilyeats this afternoon with my wife and young child. We found out about this location thru their neighbouring ice cream store Churnt Up! When they ran a anniversary raffle, raffling off different prizes and gift cards from the different vendors at the same location. During the live stream of their raffle, they talked about the amazing Patty's and pies here and I dug around and read a BlogTO article about this patty shop and thought hey! I have to try this! We visited the location on a Tuesday, and found out they are close on Mondays and Tuesdays. My bad for not researching and just assuming they were open. Returned today on a Sunday afternoon, and most of the shops here have a little remote bell to ring them. Seems like there's a hidden back kitchen where most of the different restaurant concepts are working making their magical food! We ordered a mild beef patty and the chicken pot pie. My daughter loved the buttery, flaky chicken pot pie crust. The filling was plentiful, juicy, and full of flavour to go with the chicken and carrots inside. The pie was served hot and very fresh. almost burnt myself eating it too fast! On to the mild beef patty that I ordered. Nice beef and beef filling. I'm used to a bigger beef patty, so a bit sad there, but it was a very nice juicy patty. After eating the chicken pot pie and the patty, we purchased half a dozen...
Read morePhamilyeats started off as a side gig by Peter Pham during the Covid lockdown in 2021. Thanks to the popularity of his Social Media account, Pham gained notoriety for his Jamaican patties and pot pies.
They now have a physical location in the East York Eats location along with other eateries.
We ordered their Spicy Beef, Curry Chicken and Vegan patties.
The spicy beef patties are really solid. The crust was flaky. The meat was nicely seasoned with the right amount of gravy. The ratio of crust to filling was good. It definitely had a kick which is essential. They do offer mild beef patties. The other pattie that I enjoyed was the Vegan. The filling had the right consistency although it seemed sweeter. The curry chicken patty was underwhelming.
I’ll definitely will be back to try their pot pies.
Parking is available with paid street parking. They shared a common space with other eateries in the...
