Let me start this review off by saying it's b/c of experiences like this why I am skeptical of where I eat roti from. Secondly, I absolutely regret not taking any pics but I appreciate anyone who takes the time to read this.
I've seen several positive reviews online & via social media for this restaurant then a friend recommended it to me as well. She told me there's a 3 for $10 special every Tues so I flew down there right away only to learn the special is now avail on Wed's. I still ordered 3 sm rotis. I originally asked for a sm boneless goat and was told that's not an option for a sm roti so I proceeded to order 2 boneless chicken rotis & 1 w/ aloo & channa only. There were 3 young girls at the counter who instead of politely asking me to hold on, had a convo amongst themselves and the tall one went to the back to "check if they had skins" When she returned, I was told they could make my order but I had to wait 5 mins which was fine by me but it was also my 1st red flag b/c roti skins should not be idly waiting to be filled. They should be rolled and filled when ordered. I did specifically tell the server I wanted paratha and the girl wrote "p/s" for plain shell or plain skin on my bag (2nd red flag). Within 2 mins my order was ready but the bag wasn't warm (3rd red flag b/c real roti can't go from hot to warm so fast). I gave my mother her roti & went into the kitchen to fix a plate for my son and clearly heard her say "this is roti?" When I opened mine I instantly new why she said that. The roti skin was actually a soft tortilla wrap and not a paratha skin. I phoned the restaurant the next day (today, Wednesday) to ask if this was normal practice and the girl on the line started running down the list of all the fillings I could get inside a roti. I asked to speak to the Mgr and a woman came on the line. I explained what happened and of course she denied it. She asked for my name, told me hold on then a man came on the line. I repeated the matter to him and started screaming at me on the line. I listened to him and when I tried to speak again he yelled some more. I asked him why he wouldn't give me a chance to speak and he claimed he was trying to ask me to come into the store so we could talk about the matter further. I told him I didn't see the need to waste my gas to come in and have him shout at me. My cousin tried to defuse the matter and he began shouting some more. "No, no, no! ... I'm not going to listen to this! ... You can go to any roti place and this is what they will give you!" He clearly wasn't trying to hear anything I had to say so I ended the call and wrote this review. I truly, truly wished I took a picture so I had proof to support my claim. All I can say is that I was born in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago so I am confident I know what paratha should look & taste like and so does my mother. Roti, Roti served authentic Trinidadians Tortillas, Tortillas and I am confident this is not their first time doing it. I truly believe they do serve fresh roti (possibly for large rotis and dahl phourie only) but didn't have any more dough balled out hence the substitution. Why else would they "check to see if they had any skins"? I would completely respect the owners more if they took accountability & told the truth but the wrong and strong attitude on top of you charging me full price for curry wrapped tortillas....hell to the no. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me....
Read moreIf you're looking for a good old-fashioned West Indian roti or doubles, you must visit Roti Roti. They have been making the tastiest roti and doubles in the west-end of Toronto and which I have had the pleasure of enjoying for many years. As such, my most recent visit prompted me to edit this review to include their newest attraction on Tuesdays featuring their Toonie special where you get the boneless mini-chicken roti for a decent price. Get two to go!
Among my frequent visits to this shop, I have enjoyed the Potato, the Shrimp and the Chricken roti. All are well worth the price, considering the size of their roti is good enough to satisfy the hungry man. The doubles are also fairly large (Tip: buy 5 and you get one free!) and are made with fresh chick peas and not the frozen kind that some other roti shops offer you. That in itself is a huge difference in the taste quality of doubles.
And yet, the best part of the roti or doubles from Roti Roti includes their home-made Pepper sauce which is one of the tastiest and hottest I have sampled in Toronto. That, mixed in with their special Tamarind sauce is quite simply to die for. Just don't go there on a Monday - they're...
Read moreI first met Ron at a Costco while he was shopping. Being the affable and friendly gentleman he is, we struck up a conversation about his family restaurant on Albion. I decided to check it out as I am of fellow Trinidadian diaspora. I was extremely impressed and happy I found this gem. Delicious rich flavourful curry and doubles close to what you'd find in Trinidad. That was over 10 years ago. Over the years my family and I have enjoyed the plethora of Trini-Caribbean dishes and dessert / confectionery. We have also admired how the facilities have progressed and made for a more pleasant dining experience. Ron and his staff work with mechanical accuracy and diligent service to ensure food is served as fresh as possible. As life keep going forward and my family and I moved further away We missed the food at roti roti, that is until recently when we decided to move back closer to the neighborhood. I say all that as to say that just like the Roti Roti motto is "No roti is done before its time" my experience is "You always come back for more roti in time". Thank you Ron for all the years of great down home Trinidad / Caribbean food you...
