I basically chose the Bell & Beacon off a Google map because I was searching for a place where we could grab a quick bite and a drink before an event at Parkdale Hall. In checking it out further, I read somewhere that it was co-owned and operated by a trio of former Skyline staffers. What could be bad, I asked.
Absolutely nothing. We were amazed by what my companion called "real food."
Real good food.
I had the mussels and fries and, as a former Montrealer, I was thrilled to get my moules gutsy and garlicky. Sure, a tad greasy but who can complain about that puddle of butter at the bottom of the bowl? (A chunk of baquette woulda been nice to sop it up but this is a small complaint.)
My companion had the Piri-Piri chicken which came beautifully-charred and crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.
Bot of us had the winter greens salad, a generous pile of hearty, substantial greens smothering crispy toasty Brussels sprouts.
We were seated on the back patio which was cozy and quiet and we would have lingered longer but we had that event to get to.
Service was friendly, speedy and efficient, but not rushed.
All told, a perfect little early dinner.

Read moreThe Bell is downstairs and sells pizza. I didn't go downstairs so I can't credibly review the food, although it did smell good.
The Beacon is upstairs with a black ceiling, dim lights, and a small chalkboard with their draft and cocktail specials. It's cozy, has two bathrooms, a classic metal-tip dartboard, seats at the bar for about ten, and chairs & tables for another 10-20 or so. The drinks are reasonably priced for Toronto in 2025.
DJ DC hosts karaoke on Tuesdays. If you arrive at start time (9pm) it'll be you, DJ DC, the bartender, and whoever else is there in rotation until the sister restaurant down the street lets out around 11, when the place quickly fills up with enthusiastic singers and a cheerful crowd.
Is it pretty and flashy? Absolutely not. Did it feel like my grandpa's basement bar in his old house when I was growing up? Absolutely yes. It's basically the Cheers of Parkdale. Get a drink, sing a song, make friends with the locals, and if you end up having a bad time it's your...
Read moreCame here for the first time and was welcomed by a very friendly and bubbly worker! The service was great and really enjoyed his energy (I wish I got his name). We were let know that the usual chef was not in so certain items were not able to be made. Our appetizers were divine! We absolutely adored the calamari but I especially loved the Cesar salad handhelds. My partners spaghetti entre came with only 3 shrimp which was disappointing given the price. I got the ravioli, which was cold and mushrooms were very overcooked:( we definitely want to give this place a second chance given the circumstances with the chef! We had a great experience otherwise and absolutely loved the decor! Would definitely check out the upstairs bar...
