The Old House Chinese Restaurant — Restaurant in Toronto

Went here with my wife and adult son. We are Canadians. l have a Jamaican back ground and my wife has a Philippina background. We were in Scarborough for some work. When we finished in the evening we wanted to treat ourselves to some authentic Chinese food. We found this place using the Google Maps Explore feature. Once we entered Old House we thought it may have been a little too authentic for our comfort. The eating area was small amd the menu was in all Chinese. But, as soon as we sat, our server greeted us with an amazing welcoming smile and promptly gave us a multilingual menu. The menu choices were not what we were expecting to see (General Tao, sweet and sour pork Cantonese fried rice etc.), so we had to scan the full menus to find and try new selections like "vegetables and chicken wings", "spicy clams", "pork slices" and a few others. When the food came out the portions were large and surprisingly and pleasantly more tasty than expected. Anyway, long story short, we were looking for authentic Chinese and what I think we found was an authentic "home cooked" Chinese restaurant, which was a bonus. Oh, and after we ate our fill, there was plenty of left overs to take home. I would definitely eat there again and would definitely recommend this...

We used to go to a pace in china town of Houston, TX, USA and since we moved to Toronto, we have been searching for food which will taste as good as there. So far no luck. Today tried this restaurant and the food appears to be made the same way and so I guess it is authentic, but the taste can be improved. Chicken-Deep Fried Chilli can have bit more flavor and chicken can be crispy. It was almost soft. However, this is the closest I have found so far to what we used to eat. This is the reason why I am giving 3 stars. Sliced Fish In Hot Chilli Oil - we are not satisfied with this because there is hardly any trace of chilli oil. It was just fish in boiled flavor water. The taste for this comes with chilli oil but due to the lack of it, can't find any taste. I wish restaurant takes this feedback and improves the taste. Nonetheless, I am coming back for...

I've had the takeout option at this location, the lamb skewers, the peanut sauce cold noodles and a few dishes off to the side. The food was under portioned and wasn't up to par with any standards, there was more onion than you can count a grain of meat. The red bean dessert had gone bad and smelt horrid, but it was still willingly sold. Not to mention the fact that they have charged me almost double tax, when my order was supposed to be around 70 dollars, but they had added and extra 10 for their tips. I know it is challenging time but please explicitly exclaim any extra charges you may charge on the customer, it is very misleading. Overall would not recommend and definitely won't be coming back.
